Hello everyone, and welcome to my blog. It's less than 7 days since I arrived at Steemit, and I have been learning since the day I got here. Today, I am will be writing on Content Etiquette. Before I continue, let me define Etiquette first, as this will help us understand what I want to discuss.
"The set of rules or customs that control accepted behavior in particular social groups or social situations"Cambridge Dictionary
Before I continue, What I did above is an example of how to quote another source's content and how to cite the source. That said, let's go back to Etiquette.
Etiquette according to the Cambridge Dictionary explains that it is a set of rules or guides on how to behave in a social situation or group. It is important to know that Steemit is a blockchain social media platform and so when creating content, certain etiquettes are required to be followed. While reading the post by @steem.history which explained the Steemit Etiquette Guide, I was able to come to understand the guides needed on Steemit to behave well.
What is Steemit Etiquette? From my understanding, they are guidelines (not stiff rules) that users are to follow, so as to enable a hostile free, and habitable community experience for one another. These etiquettes will allow for better behaviors among users on the platform. These etiquettes include;
Don't post and run: Steemit is not a place to come dump your post, as it is not a dumping site. It is important that after posting, we perform other activities in the community which includes upvoting, leaving comments, replying to comments, and spending more time on adding value to the community.
Don't over-post: From what I read and understood, posting 100 times in a day would not guarantee 100 upvotes, it would only make your writing less relevant as people will start to take you less seriously. Posting the above 4 posts a day is going to affect the value of your content to your followers as well as discourage your upvoters.
Don't post nudity or graphic imagery unless you tag it with NSFW: Nobody is against you posting adult content, but it is important to post them using the NSFW tag, which helps set the mind of the readers that they are about to see adult contents.
Other guides are;
- Don't plagiarise other people's work and pass them as yours.
- Tag spamming engagement should not be welcomed.
- Resteeming everything you see is not advised.
- Posting unrelated links in the comment section is wrong.
- You should not ask for votes and do not expect reciprocal votes.
- Asking for money and vote buying is prohibited.
- Users should not use their wallets to get attention
- Using the @all in the chat is a bad thing to do, and do not directly message people you aren't familiar with.
- Flagging of contents because you do not agree with them is wrong and should not be done
- Stalking or trolling is kicked against
- Unhealthy remarks, witch-hunting, and unnecessary dramas are not welcomed.
- Arguments should be constructive and not taken personally,
- Don't criticize people's work except you are asked to, and when you criticize, make sure it is constructive criticism.
- Admit when you have done wrong and apologize appropriately.
- Learn to forgive people
- Endeavour to reply to comments on your posts.
- Help others out and always say thank you to people who help you.
- Create impressive posts, so others can read and enjoy them.
- Interact in the community by checking out new posts and curating.
- If you eventually flag a post, it is important to always leave the reason in a comment, and always go back to check the authors remark
- Provide verification, so we can know who is behind the keyboard.
- Read the rules of chat channels you are about to start interacting on.
I must confess that I read these etiquettes and I love every guide stated in the post, and I will be following them. That said, let's discuss Plagiarism.
Plagiarism if I will define it in my own terms is passing off someone else's words, sentences, pictures, videos, and work as yours.
Plagiarism can happen in different forms, such as copying and pasting information word for word from a person or source without quoting or citing the person or source, using the same structure of word but paraphrasing text from a source. Writing the exact words or sentences from someone else without using quotation marks (" "). Spinning words from a source without giving credit or citing the source. It is important to reference sections from any part of an article if they were the inspiration for the writing.
Let's discuss Citation, and to do that, I will be citing a lot of my sentences and words going forward.
"It is not sufficient to simply note that “text source is Wikipedia”. A link to the specific Wikipedia page where the content came from is required. If numerous sources were used, adding the source after each separate idea is recommended".Source
The quoted word above is from @cryptokannon and that is a simple illustration of citation. Citation is properly quoting someone else's article, word, or sentence and properly referencing them at the end of the quote. Images can be cited when they are not originally yours.
Like the image above, I got the image from https://unsplash.com and referenced the image properly since it wasn't mine. That is an example of how to cite/reference images.
In summary, plagiarism can be related to content/intellectual theft. It is very bad as the owner of the content can pursue legal options which aren't good for the plagiarist. Also, in the community, such users will lose relevance and would not be upvoted by other users in the community. When the contents aren't your original contents, then it is important to quote and source the content, and with images, it is important to reference the source of the image.
In the end, I will say that I have read and understood the Steemit Etiquette on Steemit Community and will do my best to embrace them"
