Its name "Dendrobium" comes from the Greek word (δένδρον) dendron = "trunk, tree" and (βιος) "Bios" = "Life", in short it means "they live on the trunks of trees" (hence their epiphytic nature of these plants). However, it can be found growing on rocks (lithophytes) and some even have a terrestrial growth habit.
