    SDGs goals

NO POVERTY.

The UN first SDGs is to eradicate poverry by 2030. They aim to achieve at least 60% reduction in the poverty rate.

No Poverty Target

  • Their motto is to end poverty in all its forms everywhere. In the world so many people cannot afford to spend a dollar a day. In Nigeria ₦500 is sometimes hard to get by.
  • This goal aims to reduce the number of persons living in poverty in whatever situation you can imagine.
  • They hope to implement social protection and provide a workable system that will cover the poor and the vulnerable, they will be able to distinguish which demographic group will be protected under this system.
  • That by 2030, all men and women must have an equal right to acquire the economic resources, also having full access, control and ownership of other resources and services such as inheritance, natural resources
  • To have a society where climate changes will not be a big problem for the poor and vulnerable especially during climate change related events like tornadoes, earthquake, tsunami etc.

This target has been on a progress record since it's adoption in 2015 but with the recent COVID-19 pandemic, it backtracked to where they had started. Coupled with the COVID-19, the change in climate, nature and increment of the world population, it seems like this particular goal will not be achievable unless immediate actions are being carried out.

The pandemic has proven that there is a great need to protect vulnerable people which include men and women, children and disabled. It has also shown that there is an huge increase of poverty percent from 8.4% to 9.5% according to [nowcast], this is due to the fact that many was laid off their jobs, some lost their homes, source of livelihood and for some families their breadwinner. Statistics has shown that there will be a continuous increase in the rate of persons with Poverty.

Poverty in Nigeria

Nigeria in accordance to the UN SDGs aims at lifting 100 million people living in poverty by 2030. It might seem unattainable with the increament of poor persons even before the pandemic. Nigeria, one of the most populous countries in Africa battles with poverty at a high range, every minute six out of ten people fall into debts which lands them into Poverty.

Ways to curb poverty in Nigeria.

  • Support education especially for the girl child. Over 10 million children do not attend school majority of the number being girls. Girls are usually kept at home to help in training their brothers, some are even married off at am early age to elevate the family's status. There are lots of girls out there who are hungry for education but are being deprived of this one gift. If Nigeria can invest in seeing that at least every household that has a girl child be granted free admission.

  • Implement ways to increase good healthcare and wellbeing of the people: If the government can see that good healthcare services are being stationed in all the rural areas, then we have hope that poverty can be reduced. Nigeria has the highest number of people battling with one Illness or the other like malaria, tuberculosis, infant and mortality on a daily basis. Finding means to avoid this situation will ensure that Nigeria knows what they planning.Reference Source

  • Nigeria must embrace Innovation and technology advancement: To end poverty in a country, there must be an immeasurable desire to embrace technology in all fullness. There must be opportunities for improvement in the economic productivity and also give chance for individual involvement. Most of the times, you see different persons who aspires to creat change through technology in Nigeria it are being pushed aside for political games. Supporting private owned companies and encouraging entrepreneurship are a great way to boosting the country. If these are carried out, then we have a great chance of victory.

Conclusion

Nobody wants a situation/country where nothing is moving forward. I am huge fan of supporting education but in the same manner, there are lots of skills out there that needs to be discovered, nurtured and explored for its full manifestation. Government should see that institutes are opened where these skills can be learnt. They should support the introduction of technology in the country, one where it's citizens can build mighty equipment and tools. They should not be backwards in their thoughts but grant chance for newer innovations.
