Parishable Food Vending Machine Oddities

A Cake Boss Vending Machine opened up last November in Toronto, actually, three popped up. According to a Blogto Article this vending machine is making a fortune- well, maybe during the first few days. Every time I walk past it, it's full of cakes and probably losing money. $8.99 is a high price to pay for a slice of cake in a building that has three large grocery stores and dozens of cafes within a couple of blocks, all with a much wider variety of dessert options.

People Pay for Convenience

Those cakes do look delicious but I've never been tempted. In this day and age with so many options, once the novelty wears off, I wonder why anyone would make this their source for a snack. We have fresh and fast food delivery services literally at our fingertips, the convenience of the vending machine just doesn't beat that of the App.

One more vending machine found in our vicinity is the Pizza Vending Machine. Launched just over a year ago, Pizzaforno takes refrigerated pizzas and bakes them fresh in three minutes. Another novelty I have yet to try as there are just so many options!

Living in the center of a large city presents so many choices for food that it's impossible to try even a fraction of what's available. These machines caught my eye as they serve perishable food which one should want as fresh as possible. I'm assuming that the cakes and pizzas are replaced every single day but I've passed by late at night and have still seen them filled-the food waste must be incredible. Sustainability is a serious concern.

Fancy machines making food available for us may be a dream for some but I prefer the human touch. The quality of the ingredients may be on par with the best and why can't a machine can't ever prepare a dish better than a person? My main concern is with the presentation, having something coming fresh out of a machine nicely packaged just doesn't cut it. There is a social aspect of food preparation, presentation and consumption that vending machines will never replace.

There are vending machines at Baskin Robbins ice cream shops here. One is near my workplace so I walk by it a lot. I've never seen anyone using the machine. Half the appeal of Baskin Robbins is looking at all the icecreams with your nose up to the glass and taking 10 minutes to decide which one you want. Maybe it's used more often by the drunks at night when the shop is closed.
Putting perishable foods in them does seem rather silly. I can't see it creating more waste than a normal cake shop. Maybe they should sell the stale cakes for a discount or give them to hungry people.

You're right maybe they are selling old cakes but wouldn't they want to put a news release out or tell us? The problem with these machines is that once people get over the novelty they are just a waste. No News since they were launched. You can go to one of many places without going outside including a large upscale Italian grocery store (Coppas) and buy a better cake for cheaper. Changing the location won't help either.

Do these vending machines take the place of takeaways?

Or are there still plenty of pizza takeaways, for example, as well ?

There are pizza shops or places you can get pizza on nearly every block, all the takeaway apps and in-house delivery services gladly offer pizza. The machine is a novelty.

We only have very basic vending machines here - chocolate bars and soft drinks.

These are interesting vending machines. I doubt I would have been tempted by them. But then again, I lived in Japan where vending machines where everywhere and sold all kind of crazy stuff, so a cake or pizza machine does not surprise me at all.
