It's easy to protect someone when there is a benefit to those who do the concealing but what happens when that person does something that hurts everyone and others find out they were concealed by others?
Why would anyone have trust in that group who was protecting the one who did or was doing bad?
You become part of the facade when you conceal something from the group for others.
Normally it is guilt by association but in this example, it sounds like guilt by deception.

They don't, but very few want to rock the boat - in case it costs them.
