This guy rides a bicycle with many sachets of instant drinks. We called them Starling--Starbucks Keliling. Literal meaning: roving Starbucks.
Starling is just another wordplay by Jakarta's working class. The back story is simple, Starbucks is just too expensive for us :P. So, for a cup of coffee, Starling is the perfect alternative. Much cheaper, so many choices. And the best part: they come to you with their bike. We just need to call them (by shouting) when they're cycling around the street.
Starlings provide us with coffee or tea (hot or cold), instant herbal drinks (mostly ginger flavor), instant noodle cup, and other small snacks (fried peanuts, soybeans, or corn). They also provide you tablets for headaches and diarrhea.
Central Jakarta is the perfect place for Starling since there are many open spaces, parks, and alleys. It's easy to spot them riding on the narrow streets behind the tall offices, megamalls. They love to chill in the parks. You'll also find them at the front of Mosques (on Friday) and Churches (on Sunday).
I ordered a cup of coffee, fried peanuts, and one noodles cup. Cost me IDR 10.000, or around US$0.73 at the current rate. The taste? Of course, it's bad! LOL. Nothing good ever comes from Jakarta's street.
