Why do I study what I study?

Languages + programming? No way.

I have had a lot of people ask me why I study Estonian. I take IT classes as well and, frankly, I put more effort into those classes. However, I love Estonian and I have been looking for the exact reason as to why I study this language. Well, lately I found it.

The University of Tallinn posts one-minute-lectures on Facebook and their latest lecture was about arts. There was a professor of arts speaking about why we need music, paintings and every other form of art in our lives. The quote that stood out most to me was:

"In a world of robots and algorithms, creativity and feelings are the only thing that separates us from them."

This has been the exact thing I have been telling other people as the reason of studying a language, which might not even come into use in my later days. However, my dream is that I can somehow integrate my degree in language sciences with a degree in infotechnology, which I am planning to study in my Masters.

And while I love programming a lot (I have been doing light Python, Java, SQL and even learned a bit of HTML and CSS), I love Estonian, the sound of it, the phonetics, the history etc. I really love the structure of programming languages and also the structure of the Estonian language. I love learning new things.

I also think that we live in a society in which the T-shape model doesn't work that well any more. In the early days, if you knew how to do three things, you knew how to do one of those things better than the others. In today's world, I think that we need to know at least two of those three things on a good level. And that's what I'm trying to do.

Why do you do what you do? Let me know down in the comments!

I think that is quite awesome, that you study Estonian beside programming - what we can learn from men who have made it before us, is having two major skills and incorporating them can probably create a niche for you to take over the world.

Ahh, exactly my point! I am not a "I'll take over the world" kind of guy, but I might give it a shot one day. Ha.

''Why do you do what you do?''

At this point I have no idea what I do at all.
I'm still unemployed, applying to jobs, going to interviews, waiting for a course next month...
I haven't gone to any other school after graduating from high school either.
So is there really a thing that I do?

But what would I want to do? I guess something related to infotechnology aswell as something creative / artsy. ''Why, though?'' is a question difficult to answer.

Doing a lot of things at once is also doing something. You're doing courses, applying to jobs, taking care of your family etc. You're doing an amazing job, don't be so hard on yourself! :-)

Learning a new language is always a positive experience, wiah you all the best :)

Well, Estonian isn't necessarily a new language to me, as it is my mother tongue, but there are still a lot of aspects of this language that I haven't learned yet, which makes it very interesting to me. Thank you! :-)

I am a html programmer.

I've got some sad news for you. :-(
