Totally lack of free speech is the worst thing that can ever happen, that's also the reason I decided to move out of China years ago. Never underestimate the power of the authority there. I know many Chinese website has a huge team to sit there deleting comments/posts. Even some random government officer can shut down your whole site for some random reasons.

Yep. You can see the 五毛党 all over western sites, too (Facebook in particular). They even have permanent adspace in... the NYTimes newspaper? That is a full spreadsheet of propaganda. The worrying thing now is that they're starting to become expansionist and their ideas being fed as far as Europe (Greece for example) with all that juicy money as an incentive... hard to escape really

yea I largely stopped using any China sites. Was following a bit during coronavirus and I can say it’s really bad, basically unusable as discussions are constantly deleted or ruined by 五毛党

五毛党?
50 cent army. Basically a flood of millions of Chinese is supposedly paid 50 cents for every pro-Chinese propaganda they post around the internet, whether its Facebook comments or tweets or whatever. Realistically it's just a requirement in their jobs but the term just refers to those contrived, blindly pro CCP comments you find all over the place. they amount to a not-insignificant chunk of the entire internet's content. In English just: Wumao

The other day someone posted an advert on one of my FB group, it was fromsomeone on wechat offering RMB100 to expats in China to post videos on social media that plays down the Wuhan virurs. I thought that was absolutely hilarious.

You know as well as I do that the context of these videos has been distorted. The Mahjong trap house clip is perhaps the funniest of all of them....along with the fact that the guy eating mice is speaking Vietnamese...

so? of course it's all second hand info but I guess since I've lived in China for almost 20 years, I'm able to state what I noticed.

So as at least 15 out of these 20 clips have nothing to do with Wuhan or COVID-19 - why comment at all? It's convenient that the audio is sped up as it makes it harder to understand the Mandarin.
