Off to the early morning Shongweni Market we went, driving through the rolling green hills of Kwazulu Natal.
We knew we were in for another hot summer's day as we saw the early morning sunshine lighting up the sugarcane fields.

It was our first visit here but we were not surprised to see the huge number of cars parked in the middle of nowhere, as this is a very popular market. Just the place to share with all the shoppers visiting @dswigle's marketfriday as there's tons to see and buy - from food to crafts to live music!

Carpark.png

We soon saw why this market is so popular as the first thing that hit us was... food...glorious food, the sound of good live music and handcrafted goods further back!

Tempting pastries, breads, cheeses, smoked meats, gluten free pastries, vegan food and fresh produce to name but a few. Enough food to put all of the foodfightfriday gangsters of @dandays, @jlsplatts and @idig plus all the weekly contenders into a food coma!

That show-off photo you saw in the beginning is sinfully rich Croissants - topped with delicious stuff like little bits of creamy Fudge, drizzled with Chocolate or Glace Icing and topped with Berries and Nuts.

Artisan breads - sourdough, rye, wholemeal, breads baked with Feta cheese and olives, the cutest little bread rolls topped with sesame and poppy seeds.
20200201_085228.jpg

Delicious breakfast fare - a yeast dough base with a variety of savoury toppings.

20200203_100107-COLLAGE.jpg

Gluten free pastries that really looked great - sweet or savoury ones.

20200201_085515.jpg

Spicy Indian snacks - Samoosas, Vadas, Chili Bites and more.

20200201_085331.jpg

A peek at my stash of breads and rolls.
20200201_144854.jpg

Gorgeous organic fruits and veggies; prickly pears that I have not seen for yonks as well, those are really delicious!
20200201_085611.jpg

I think we've done enough food shopping for now, so let's move onto crafts and other stuff before I land into a food coma; almost did just looking at all the delicious fare on offer!

20200201_085001.jpg

A little nursery and flower shop showing off hanging baskets and stunning Proteas; the latter hails from the southern and southwestern regions of South Africa. They're also known as sugarbushes or fynbos and represents change and hope in local tradition.

These two seem to be standing guard over the area.
20200201_085847.jpg

Handmade leather shoes at the little shoe store.
20200201_085928.jpg

A myriad of leather belts to choose from made by a local craftsman.
20200201_093918.jpg

Really cool cork bags with an illustration showing how the oak trees are debarked. Apparently they're harvested every nine years once they have reached maturity. I was concerned when I heard this but it doesn't harm the tree as the cork bark grows again.
20200201_094346.jpg

Gorgeous beadwork trinkets.
20200201_093447.jpg

20200201_093947.jpg

Stainless steel artwork - some made with everyday utensils.

Well known potter's work; Ann Schultz who is an old friend of ours.

20200201_164433-COLLAGE.jpg

Hubby bought me this unusual candle holder made by Ann.

20200203_101321-COLLAGE.jpg

Traditional African crafts.

20200201_090509.jpg

20200201_090515.jpg

20200201_091126.jpg

After having a cup of coffee and a bite to eat while listening to live music; it was time to head back home; all feeling very happy with our loot and seeing such gorgeous goods on sale plus bumping into a couple of old friends as well!
Definitely worth getting up an hour earlier on a Saturday morning to visit this market!

I am always touched to see #MarketFriday continue on, even in my absences! We have such loyal and wonderful people on board here. As you may or may not know, I have been in Columbia, South America and Panama and even a but of Miami. So I have missed the luxury od having a great connection whenever I want. However, the experience is truly worth it!

I did get to read all of the #MarketFriday posts and as usual, you never disappoint! We have the most inventive people when it comes to the challenge. You shine!

mushrooms and flowers look great!

I also loved those, thanks for visiting @anggreklestari!

Whoa - this looks like an awesome market - we have nothing like that over here. Our market is very small on a Saturday morning - but at least we get good fruit and veg

We got there a little late so most of the fresh produce was gone, but definitely going back there again! Thanks for popping in @pandamama, always great seeing you :)

Thanks for sharing your experience with us!

Awe thank you so very much @foodiesunite, much appreciated!

Those breads look delicious. Feeling fully just looking at them. I also like the traditional masks, too.

It was very tempting to buy more, but one can only eat so much at one time, will have to go back to try something different next time;) Thanks for popping in @abitcoinskeptic!

Wow, beautiful post and great photos. How I want to visit that place, o la la! The food, the crafts... those bead works ... Thank you for putting a smile on my face on this gloomy winter day here, in New York. 😊

...and to think we're sweating in the sweltering heat here on the other side of the world;);)
It really is a wonderful market, glad you enjoyed it, thank you for joining me at the market:)

It's so fun to read how hot it is there while watching it snow here haha. Those baked goods lool so delicious!

Awesome post @lizelle. I put on a couple of pounds just reading the content.
Great pics of all the crafts offered at the market. The pictures of the man removing the bark from the tree was very interesting. I too would think that removing so much of the bark from a tree would kill it.
Are the cork bags made from the oak Bark?

Ok, I couldn't get out of that place without eating a dozen different pastries and gaining 10 pounds. Love all of the different crafts. The guy up in the oak tree removing the tree's bark just amazed me. Any tree from my neck of the woods would surely die if that much bark was removed.
As is always the case, I enjoy reading the content you post.

Thanx for taking me on your walk ! I loved the belts

  ·  5 years ago (edited)

And thank you for joining me at the market! Those leather belts were tempting me as well...but there's always a next time;)
Our guest told me that something he bought there was double the price at one of the tourist stops in town!
