Seeing my own city through the eyes of our German guest has been quite an eye-opener as I've discovered some quaint and off-the beaten-track little hidden gems - the gentleman in question not enjoying crowded touristy places.
Last week I shared some of the wonderful handcrafts on sale at the KZNSA Art Gallery's little curio shop with our marketfriday and fff friends, but would like to show you the interesting artwork on display at this little art gallery in Glenwood, Durban.
An Unfurling is the work of young artists from the KZNSA Young Artist Project - Cheriese Dilrajh, Yasmien Mackay, Vanessa Tembane and Minenhle Nxele.
This organisation is a platform for experimental art in Durban, providing young artists with financial and curatorial support.
A somber mood greeted us as we walked into this exhibition; felt like we were treading on holy ground; some happy and some very sad and forlorn figures.
Interesting how the figures are etched on the fabric.
A lone figure sitting by the roadside, trying to keep warm or just trying to hide from the world?
A beautiful chair upholstered in sheepskin sat looking at the artwork.
We needed some cheering up after that and diagonally across the road we spotted a beautiful Victorian style house with a wraparound verandah; this gracious old two-story house is home to a delightful coffee shop The Savior Cafe.
One can pick and choose where to sit; outside on the verandah, in the garden or in any of the rooms inside. It was a quiet day which suited us just fine!
Quaint displays with stuff of yester-year could be seen all around; does anyone remember having a television like this once upon a time, or an old radiogram?
As it was nearing lunchtime, we ordered a scrumptious Ham & very Cheesy Quiche - even the base was loaded with cheese, crispy with a creamy filling, and very good Cappuccinos; just enough coffee bitterness and a good head of foam.
We left and decided to walk down the road to take home some freshly roasted coffee from the nearby award winning Green Bean Cafe, a very popular tiny quaint coffee roastery. The aroma of freshly roasted coffee hit us as we walked into this cafe!
Old Record player still operational playing old LP's (Long Playing records) from days gone by adds to the laidback atmosphere.
The efficient Barista, this time carefully weighing my beeeg bag of freshly roasted coffee to take home.
We would have loved to have sat down for another Cappuccino to see his work of art but time was running out so I had to be satisfied with my bag of coffee.
I certainly have been more than happy as we enjoy a wonderful cup of coffee every morning! That bag is going down at quite a rate so will have pay them a visit again soon!
Gorgeous old stained glass light fitting looked very much at home in this setting.
Our walk came to an end and we headed off back home with the aroma coming from that bag of freshly roasted coffee tempting us all the way!
I'm sure you can guess what beverage we chose when we got home?
This has been my contribution to @tattoodjay's #wednesdaywalk, hope you enjoyed walking with me!
And now for a little bit of #makemesmile with @elizcheng - I think you know by now that this would be my motto ;)
