How to Make Tofu Chips

Is there an ingredient more versatile than tofu? Maybe, but I've seen tofu recipes ranging from cakes and smoothies to stir-fries and skewers. One of my favorite things about cooking tofu is that it's a bland absorbent block. Now, that alone does not sound appealing in the least bit, but it means that tofu can take on almost flavor, making tofu recipes incredibly versatile. However, one of the downsides to simple tofu recipes, at least for me, is the texture of tofu. Even with pressed ultra-firm tofu, I don't always enjoy that soft, squishy texture it imparts on most savory healthy recipes.

I solve this texture dilemma by baking the tofu! The oven dries out the tofu block, making it actually have substance. My friend used to call these "vegan bacon" as they can be super crispy. I enjoy tofu chips just as is, but they're a great addition to salad, stir-fry or even sandwiches.

Tofu Chips

Prep Time: 5 minutes

Cooking Time: 20 minutes

Ingredients:

  • 2 blocks extra-firm tofu
  • Black pepper, to taste
  • Olive oil
  • Spices of your choice, to taste (I used garlic powder, cumin, onion powder, paprika, cumin and chili flakes)

Instructions:

  1. Preheat your oven to 450 degrees F.
  2. Slice tofu into 1/4-inch strips and place on a lined cookie sheet. Sprinkle black pepper and the spices of your choice over the tofu. Drizzle oil over the strips.
  3. Place the tofu into the oven until browned and crispy, about 20 minutes or so.
  4. Remove cookie sheet from the oven, let cool and enjoy.

This is one of easiest tofu recipes around, and it makes for one of my favorite healthy snacks recipes. I like to pair these tofu chips with hummus, or I'll chop them up and include the bits in a salad or fried rice. Also, for lessen the amount of time needed for cooking tofu here, press the blocks beforehand to remove as much water as possible.
