Imagine that you have only 4 months to live as an adult dragonfly! How would you cope?

I challenged myself to snap dragonflies eating and the first 3 photos show a dragonfly with prey in his mouth!
Don't forget also to have a look at the last picture here in the post!

We are 4 months away from winter here and there is a big scurry in the bushes to stock up for the cold period.
But of course dragonflies don't have to hoard anything, as they simple die before the cold comes.
They spend approximately 7 years under water as a brutal nymph that eats anything and then they transform into adults for mainly two purposes. To eat and more importantly to breed.
Come and enjoy the pictures in our garden!

IMG_3390.JPG

I could not see what kind of bug he caught as he had been at it for awhile before I got to him!

IMG_3392.JPG

The bottom part of a dragonflies' jaw can unhinge to suit the size of the prey that they catch!

IMG_3371.JPG

This guy was playing hide and seek with me every time that he landed, but he didn't know that I could wait him out Lol.

IMG_3370.JPG

Second landing a bit better!

IMG_3375.JPG

Third landing on a different leaf of the same bush!

IMG_3377.JPG

And finally, I got him full on Lol!

IMG_3409.JPG

We have about seven of these Cape Skimmer dragonflies here and each one has commandeered his own bush!

IMG_3406.JPG

Soon these will be starting to hunt for females and the mating dances will begin!

IMG_3397.JPG

A sad part about the mating issue is that these guys will also start to rip each other apart. They are extremely agile and very fast in flight. Some call them the ultimate predators.

IMG_3424.JPG

While hunting the dragonflies, this tiny wonder appeared to sit between the blades of the cactus plant.

IMG_3428.JPG

It is one of our smallest butterflies and it is called the "Common Geranium Bronze"!

IMG_3435.JPG

Our Geranium flowers only started to blossom on Sunday and soon there will be a few of the tiny bronze butterflies around!

IMG_3445.JPG

"That's all now folks", Squirry said, "I have come to look for him as I want some nuts and you have enough photos above to look at" Lol.

Amazing beauty, finesse and raw power that the dragonflies display. I read somewhere that in the Jurassic period they were huge monsters! They can fly in all directions even in reverse and they can hover.
"They can beat each pair of wings together, or separately and their rear wings can be out of phase with the front wings.
The wing beats is about 50 to 90 beats per second! Top speed is about 30 mph"!
This is why they can so easily catch their prey.
"Now here's the thing; Dragonflies are not flies! Although they have 6 legs, they have 4 wings and flies only have 2 wings.
They are classified as insects because of their six legs that falls into the order "Odonata"

Howdy sir papilloncharity! Those are such fantastic photos! That first one is totally amazing. The bodies are wonderful but it is the wings that I love to study.

Thank you my friend, Marian calls their wings stained glass windows Lol.

Wow and double wow for those photos!! I've tried and failed miserably. The dragonfly dances over the pool but won't sit down for a second. Hats off to you!

Thank you my dear friend and the trick is to search for the place that they go and sit. Then to wait there as they always return to the same place after a while of patrolling the waters.
I know that it's not easy and it takes a lot of patience, but it always gets results!
Blessings!

Woo!! I didn't know They spend 7 years under water! What a waste of time when they could fly longer. But that's nature's way. Btw amazing photos! 👌

Insect world is fascinating, thanks for all the information you have collected over the years and now sharing, always makes for interesting reading Stephen.

Thank you Lady Joan, but I can only thank the books that I have as lately my memory becomes more and more and more like a sieve.
Got my third drag today with a bug, but although it is clear, I can still not see what kind of a bug it is. But of course Lady Patience will eventually allow me to get one eating an identifiable bug!
Nature is indeed fascinating!
Blessings to you guys!

Aawww👏🏻💕

Beautiful collection of such beautiful creatures. I spent my entire childhood chasing around dragonflies trying to catch them and they have special place in my memories forever. Mother nature is surely an artist.

Thank you my friend and I must admit that dragonflies are not the easiest of things to get on a camera. Glad that I could stir some of your treasured memories. I have 2 wives, my human one and mother nature Lol.
Blessings!

I have caught some by hand but with a camera they are like fairies I cannot capture. And I am sorry but I am too very very deeply in love with one of your wives. I grew up with nature away from technology so I may not be able to put it in a camera but I do have my treasured memories.

Hahaha, my wife has many lovers my friend and I am not the jealous type Lol
Instead I encourage more to fall in love with mother nature, as she has a very big heart that can embrace everyone.
Glad that you have good memories of nature.
Blessings!

Beautiful pictures, I never had the luck to see them so close. They are most of time on fly.
It make me smile a little because I never heard their english name "Dragonfly" :)
I always liked them but I did not know they only live 4 months...
