Trip to Portugal - Piódão

Serra do Açor, where stunning panoramas, springs and pasture fields abound, the historic village of Piodão resembles a nativity scene due to the harmonious way in which its houses are arranged in an amphitheater and which, at night when lighting is turned on, form one of its best images.

The mark of this mountain village with narrow and winding streets is shale, an abundant material in the region, which is used in the construction of houses and on the street floor, forming a uniformly colored patch interrupted by the strong blue of the windows and doors of some of the houses.

This discordant color note owes its origin to a practical factor because it is said that the only store that supplied the population only had blue paint and given the isolation of the village it was not easy for people to move to another location. It was in reality the isolation and the difficulties of movement that preserved the characteristics of this ancient settlement intact.

 

Given its location hidden in the hills, Piodão was once an ideal shelter for fugitives from justice, thinking that here one of the assassins of D. Inês de Castro, who managed to escape the fury of D. Pedro I.

 

A historic village without a leading role in the history of Portugal, Piódão has become known in more recent times for its scenic location nestled in the Serra do Açor, a reason to visit.
