Lefkada is a Greek island in the Ionian Sea, in the west of Greece, connected by a land embankment and a drawbridge. The capital and seat of the municipality is the town of Lefkas. It is located at the entrance to the island, about a 20-minute drive from Aktion International Airport near Preveza.

The name Lefkada is derived from the Greek word "Leukos" meaning "white" and refers to the white rocks that you can see most in the western part of the island.

The island is only 330 square kilometers in size. You can travel from north to south for an hour's drive, and the whole island can be visited in just two hours of moderate highway travel. This says that the beaches are quite accessible to you during your vacation. There are 62 beaches in Lefkada that stretch over 117 kilometers of coastline.

Lefkada is the only island accessible by car or bus without ferry or boat. It crosses a drawbridge that connects the island to the mainland. According to the latest information from 18.06. to 23.08. from 10am to 4pm the bridge rises every two hours for all other days for an hour misses the sailboats for 5 minutes.

With other Ionian islands such as Cephalonia, Ithaca and Meganisi, Lefkada is connected by ferries departing every day from Nidri and Vasiliki. If you are interested in some of the excursions that involve visiting some of the islands mentioned you will not be fooled.

The island is famous for its olive oil, honey (incense), grapes and wine. Lefkada also produces, as they say, the best wine in Greece, Bertzami. In addition to the wine, you can also taste some of their aromatic liqueurs, as well as some kind of almond juice called Soymada.

Of course, Mediterranean cuisine is offered in its offer, but with a lot of influence of Italian cuisine, since all the islands of the Ionian Sea have been managed by the Venetian Republic for a long time.

We recommend sweetening with many sweet honey and almond based products. Especially try the following things: hot sausages and salami, Savoro: fish with onions, garlic and rosemary, Pastels: hazelnut and honey cake, olive oil pie, yogurt with honey. And don’t forget to order which Greek salad, cheese is fantastic.

In any case, Lefkada makes an excellent impression and is for every recommendation.
