In the past, the traditional wear for the Baganda was a simple plain cloth ( suuka) which was tired round the back though the armpits and covering the chest area . This would leave the shoulders exposed.
I took this picture from an old book called Gayaza High school 1905-1995.
The royal ladies of the Buganda kingdom used to study in then the prestigious schools that were run by missionaries. Gayaza junior school that later gave birth to Gayaza high school (both are boarding schools). The young girls had the 'suuka' as uniform. Miss. Alfreda Allen, the first headmistress from 1905-1930, decided to redesign the uniform to cover the shoulders and have some short magyar sleeves. This brilliant idea that Miss. Allen came up with led the famous designer Milagres Gomez to design the Gomezi. This traditional wear is also known as 'busuuti' and sometimes it's called the ''bordinge''.
It worn on several occasions, like weddings funerals, anniversaries, graduations and others. Other tribes in Uganda started adopting the wear of the Gomezi. Tribes like Basoga and Iteso in the east and some people in the north like the Lubara and Acholi.
Fine gomezi traditional wear!
I love this attire... Sign of respect
