Origin
The term syndication is an English neologism.

1970-80 : the term is used in the audiovisual world where it designates the sale of television content to several channels simultaneously and, subsequently, the broadcasting of the same content on different media and in variable forms.

1997 The Internet Content Syndication appears with type structured text formats to XML which combined the RSS language , used to share content between sites or portals.

1999 : RSS feeds appear when Netscape decides to offer Internet users the opportunity to view personalized information on its my.netscape.com portal.

The meaning of the acronym RSS has evolved over time: from RDF Site Summary (RSS 0.9, 1.0 and 1.1), to Rich Site Summary (RSS 0.91) and finally to Really Simple Syndication (RSS 2.0).

RSS and syndication: what is it for?
Syndication of web content automatically extracts a file in XML format each time a site is updated.

RSS feeds make it possible, on the one hand, to distribute content and, on the other, to easily follow up- to-date content . This explains why they are omnipresent on sites whose content changes regularly: blogs, press and news sites, reviews and magazines, dynamic sites.

Finally, the RSS reader or aggregator allows you to read the various feeds to which you have subscribed.

The aggregator is a kind of postman who fetch the mail from outside, then drops it off at the user, dispensing the latter from regularly going to the news by visiting many websites. It works much like email (near real time) but (unlike an email client) the user of an aggregator is often limited to passive reading of received messages (the syndication thread). He cannot reply to the elements received. There are a few exceptions in the case of blog posts, where some aggregators allow you to post comments. Wikipedia

RSS feeds can be easily integrated into a monitoring process , either via simple and free tools, or via paid and more powerful software. And search engines use RSS feeds to allow you to monitor a specific request (example: Google alerts).

How it works ?
The two most popular web content syndication formats are RSS and Atom .

An RSS feed (or feed) is an XML file , including the title, author, date of publication, a summary description of the content as well as the URL to which the link points. Each RSS file is therefore accessible via a unique URL.

A site's RSS feeds are indicated by an icon , usually on an orange background with either the RSS text or the equivalent symbol in white.

Tip : The feeds depend on the site that produces them: if the site changes address or modifies its feeds, you will not necessarily be informed.
