Characteristics of plantain cultivation

Dear readers, the plantain is a tropical crop that is part of the diet of many countries, in Venezuela specifically in the southern area of Lake Maracaibo there are large tracts of land planted with this crop, calling it the green gold of the area because from the economic point of view is considered a very profitable agricultural crop for producers who distribute the fruit throughout the country and also exported to be processed by large companies for the production of banana by-products. On the other hand, from the agronomic point of view, it is a herbaceous plant belonging to the Musaceae family with male, female and/or hermaphrodite flowers that can reach over two meters in height and whose characteristics will be described in this publication.

Leaves.
The leaves of the banana plant generally have a length that can range from 1.5 to 4 meters, it is important to note that this vegetative organ is essential for the filling of the fruit since it requires the process of photosynthesis. On the other hand, in the plants can be observed the formation of rolled leaves, which is the indicator of the appearance of a new leaf and this takes approximately 7 days to unroll.

Stem and Pseudostem
It is important to note that the true stem of the banana plant is found below the ground, which is a rhizome, rhizomes are subway stems that grow horizontally below the ground. On the other hand, we have the pseudostem, as its name indicates it is not the real stem, who does not know about this crop may think that the stem of the plant is the one that is seen with the naked eye, but that stem-like structure is formed by the sheaths of the leaves that are superimposed, the pseudostem is fleshy and although it resists the weight of the adult plant with its cluster, often the wind can break the structure.

Roots
According to Sanchez (2008), the roots have a length of 2 mm and a diameter that varies between 5 and 8 mm. The primary roots emit secondary rootlets that have the function of absorption.

Inflorescence
After planting, it takes approximately 9 months for the inflorescence to appear at the end of the flowering stem, after the flowering stem appears, the male inflorescence called acorn begins to form, which has a vinotinto color, which is formed by modified leaves called bracts, then these bracts begin to rise and the female flowers are exposed, arranged in groups for the development of the fruits.

Fruit
Its fruits are rich in starch, in the floral cluster are formed in hands, a cluster can have up to 15 hands of plantain, the size of the fruits may vary depending on their optimal point of harvest and that the cultural and agronomic work is performed for their good development. On the other hand, it is important to note that the banana is a climacteric fruit that can continue its ripening process after harvesting.

Final considerations
Dear readers, banana is a demanding plantation crop, who knows the characteristics of the plant and begins with the production of banana when observing the acorn will know that the plant is in flowering stage and will soon emit female flowers for the formation of fruits. On the other hand, it can be evidenced that the formation of the pseudostem is by the foliar sheaths and in addition to this, its root system is superficial, these characteristics make the plant vulnerable to strong gusts of wind generally causing overturning or breakage of the same.

You have done a great job with the explanation. in Nigeria too, Plantain is been cultivated on a large scale but I have never really taken my time to get familiarized with the parts of the plantation.

Greetings dear @lebey1, I am glad that the content, although a bit technical, is explicit and can be understood. Undoubtedly, it is a very coveted fruit worldwide and we are fortunate that it is adapted to our climatic conditions to obtain excellent yields.

See you later brother, have a great week.

Hello @amestyj
I have seen hundreds of banana plants, but in my life it never caught my attention enough to investigate all this that you explain so well. The truth is that nature, from whatever point of view we see it, is always full of details.
I never thought that the real stem was under the ground, for example. Of course, to each his own. Thanks for this explanation.

Hello dear friend @josevas217, certainly nature is full of many important details, which is necessary for the producer and the agropecuary technician to know in order to perform an excellent management.

The rhizome as I mentioned there, is a subway stem that grows horizontally under the ground, banana plants are propagated by vegetative seeds, ie with parts of these rhizomes.

See you later, have a great week.
