The Role of Artificial Intelligence in Healthcare

Artificial intelligence or popularly known as ‘AI’ seeks to enhance healthcare through new ideas on diagnosis, therapy and patient treatment. As noted before, one of the most important benefits of AI is that it helps to search for patterns in large data volumes more efficiently than clinicians. This capability has been most striking in medical imaging in which AI-based systems can determine whether there is presence of tumors or fracture among other diseases.

AI also improves on the area of custom care since it looks at data such as the patients genome and scientific estimate of how the patient will likely react to the treatment given. For instance, the use of AI is able to prescribe certain personal treatment regimens for cancer depending on a patient’s genetic profile and avoid the use of toxic substances on the body.

In addition, there has been advances in using AI to enhance operations of hospitals. Machine learning models can be used to predict patient admissions also, therefore minimizing patient’s wait time, and effectively managing resources in a healthcare facility. Chatbots and virtual assistants powered by AI are also improving the level of patient participation due to accurate support and information in real time.

Still, there are issues that need to be solved such as the protection of personal data and the morality of AI decision in important health issues.
