In terms of pioneering technology in the area of the oil industry, it is necessary to highlight all the technology that applies to solve the problems encountered from the point of view of engineering and science in order to extract oil.

The oil reservoir is in the subsoil, it is a physical entity that cannot be visualized as the elements that can be seen on the surface, however thanks to the digitization can simulate the behavior of a reservoir in relation to the contribution of fluids that may have as water, gas and / or oil, petrophysical studies such as porosity, permeability of the rock, fluid saturation, among other factors can be studied from the visualization of the reservoir modeling by digitization.

Any innovation work in the exploration area that intends to face the challenge of being able to visualize the oil reservoirs through digitization, is because it wants to promote technological projects in which the reservoir can be characterized and simulate its natural behavior on the monitor and thus be able to combine the most advanced digital petrophysics with the most conventional methods available.

When characterizing reservoir conditions in subsurface conditions and taking them to computer digitization we may even be able to observe what is impossible to observe without digitization, such is the case of the nature of rocks in terms of their behavior, but the most incredible thing is that we can even take the reservoir conditions in the subsurface to millimeter or nanometer scales when extrapolated to digital conditions at surface by means of reservoir characterization modeling.

What disciplines are involved in a digitization project in reservoir characterization?

Logically it is impossible to sustain a project only with the computational knowledge that involves the digitization of the reservoir characterization, so basically based on my experience as a petroleum engineer and involved in the area of drilling wells, I think that basically three disciplines should be combined in the extraction of hydrocarbons using as technology the digitization of reservoir characterization, which are:

Geology.
Geochemistry.
High resolution chemistry.

Basically these three disciplines concentrate the set of knowledge necessary to provide answers to the unknowns that arise in the first phase of extraction of oil and natural gas, which is the area of exploration and that very well tries to cover the technology of digitization in the characterization of reservoirs.

The evaluation of a possible oil field will always raise the following questions:

[1] Volume of hydrocarbons contained in the reservoir: logically the reservoir may have a volume of gas and/or oil, however, through the characterization of the reservoir what is sought is to perform the evaluation of the reservoir based on the volume that can be extracted based on the extraction techniques available for the present. This evaluation and study based on the extractable volume of fluids such as gas and/or oil from the reservoir is facilitated with the digitization in the reservoir characterization.

[2] Reservoir shape and formation time: the shape of the reservoir can be obtained through the reservoir characterization by digitizing the reservoir properties and can provide us with the most appropriate techniques for drilling wells, not only that but if we can also determine the formation time of the reservoir we can get an idea of the type of fluids that we can get and the formation pressures to handle in the drilling of the same.

The conclusion of the case is that through digitization we not only bring the oilfield conditions obtained in the subsurface to be seen on the monitor through digitization technology, but we can get answers that would be impossible to obtain outside of this technology that can easily take greater scope as the digital grows throughout the oil and energy generation environment.
