I know how frustrating it feels to put off tasks even when I know they need to get done. Procrastination used to take over my days leaving me stressed and overwhelmed as deadlines loomed closer. But over time I have learned that I can overcome procrastination by taking small manageable steps instead of trying to tackle everything at once.

1. Understanding Why I Procrastinate

The first thing I had to do was understand why I procrastinated. For me,it often happened because a task felt too big or overwhelming. I would tell myself I had plenty of time or I would avoid starting because I wanted everything to be perfect.

Once I realized this, I stopped waiting for the “perfect” moment and focused on just starting. I reminded myself that getting something done even imperfectly is better than doing nothing at all.

2. Breaking Tasks into Small Steps

One of the best ways I have found to beat procrastination is by breaking tasks into smaller more manageable pieces. For example, if I have a big project, I will divide it into parts like research, outlining, and writing. Then I focus on completing just one small part at a time.

I also set short time limits for myself. Instead of saying, “I will work on this all day,” I commit to working for just 10 or 15 minutes. Once I start I usually find its easier to keep going. This approach helps me avoid feeling overwhelmed and builds momentum.

3. Rewarding Myself for Progress

Another thing thats helped me is celebrating small wins. When I complete a step I reward myself - maybe with a short break, a snack, or some time doing something I enjoy. These little rewards keep me motivated and make the process feel less like a chore.

I have also learned to forgive myself if I slip up and procrastinate. Instead of feeling guilty I remind myself that its okay to have off days as long as I keep trying to improve.


Overcoming procrastination isnt about becoming perfect - its about making progress one small step at a time. By breaking tasks down, focusing on starting, and celebrating progress, I have learned to get things done without feeling so overwhelmed. If procrastination is holding you back try starting small - you might be surprised how far it takes you.
