The earth has darkened in the last 20 years

Greetings dear friends.

A recent study indicates that the earth has darkened, or to put it in a better way, it is reflecting less sunlight back into space, something that could have a strong impact on climate.

According to a study published in the journal Geophysical Research Letters, due to climate change the Earth reflects about half a watt per square meter less light than it did 20 years ago.

A group of researchers from the Big Bear Solar Observatory has been tracking the Earth's reflectance, which is a climate parameter based on observing the Earth's brightness using photometric techniques to accurately detect changes in the Earth's albedo from the Earth's brightness.

Scientists were measuring this parameter between 1998 and 2017, recording the faint glow caused by the earth in the dark areas of the crescent moon, finding a gradual but significant decrease for the climatic effects of global albedo over the two decades of study.

This albedo, or Earth's reflectance, as the fraction of shortwave sunlight reflected back to space is known, is a key parameter in the Earth's climate, as the decrease in sunlight reflected back to space is related to the insulation caused by greenhouse gases.

On average the Earth returns to space 30% of the sunlight it receives, but between the study period it is estimated that this parameter has decreased by about 0.5%, something small but climatologically significant. And the largest decrease occurred during the last three years of the study.

The sunlight reflected by the earth can be affected by two factors, the brightness of the sun or the reflectance of the planet, but during the study it was not possible to correlate the data with periodic changes in sunlight, so the conclusion is that the reflectance of the planet is the cause and is changing because of something on the planet.

It seems that this is a consequence of other effects that have been recorded, such as the reduction of bright, low altitude clouds in the Pacific Ocean, which leave the ocean uncovered, darker and less reflective, and to this is added the progressive polar melting that causes the earth to absorb more heat.

As we can see, there are two significant factors behind this process of decreasing the Earth's reflectance, on the one hand the accumulation of greenhouse gases and the enrichment of the atmosphere with dust particles that prevent more light from leaving the atmosphere, as well as the decrease of white ice and bright clouds that help to reflect the sunlight back.

So we must consider these aspects and increase research concerning the reduction of the Earth's albedo and its effect on climate change.

Hello friend @emiliomoron.

This phenomenon could also denote by the wear of the polar ice caps that are melting and that makes the heat is absorbed progressively, apart from that as with these wear would help the rapid retreat of glaciers.

Greetings and thanks for your article

It is possible that they are related, since, as the researchers point out, less ice reflects less light, which causes more heat to be absorbed and the melting to intensify.

Very interesting article friend @emiliomoron, I had no knowledge of this climatic phenomenon and its importance, so I thank you very much for bringing us such important information, we must be attentive and be multipliers of the need to maintain good customs on environmental conservation, an issue that if the authorities of the world do nothing about it, it can cost us our preservation as a species.

Happy and blessed day

Greetings my friend, it is certainly a very little discussed environmental parameter but it shows us how greenhouse gases are trapping more sunlight, which warms the planet, certainly something we need to take stronger action on.

First of all I agree with you we are destroying our mother earth as we have seen covid-19 still we don't understand And try to destroying more.

It is a very alarming situation that these researches are raising, because the fact that there is less solar reflection implies consequences in the environment and in people's lives. It could be thought for example in a wave of intense cold as well as changes in the periods or seasons that would affect crops worldwide even the habit of animals and people could change drastically, it is for this and many other reasons that I always say that we must stop abusing the planet. Thanks for sharing.

Hello @emimoron, yes, it is a situation that should concern us all, this phenomenon could have implications at different levels, affecting all life on the planet, something we must avoid and try to reverse.

Hello @emiliomoron!

I've never knew about something like and to be honest never thought it's even possible to happen. Who would know that there is more darkness in the last 20 years... But with this phenomenon, I can see why it's happening in the first place and it actually make sense.

Thanks for sharing this information, it's great to know new things.

I had already heard about the earth's reflectance phenomenon, but I didn't know that it could be used as a parameter to measure climate change, which certainly makes sense. Thanks for reading my friend.
