Learning to think.

Thinking is a higher order cognitive process, in which the elements of rational processing are integrated, which activate our neuronal processes that are activated in the synopsis of neurons, emotions and senses intervene. Thinking can be developed as any other cognitive process, but it depends on the exercise of the same by the person, then we learn to think or we develop thinking? In this case, both things happen, first we learn to think and as the years go by we develop thinking.

Working on the development of thinking involves a series of steps that we must learn. The development of thinking, i.e. learning to think, involves applying in a planned, correct and coherent way the appropriate procedures for a task that requires us to think, without skipping any key operation and relying on the appropriate reflective attitudes and knowledge we have about it. Once we become accustomed to thinking things through, this process is automatic. There are two basic learning strategies in the development of thinking:

1.- To think in order to know and reflect:

This first strategy allows people, in the first place to face the unknown, of situations, facts and new contents to learn without fear and with an open mind towards knowing and reflecting, it is not about a mechanical or memoristic learning, it is about allowing us to discover and build that knowledge we wish to achieve. This is achieved through the execution of a series of questions that first turn that which we are going to learn into a source of curiosity or problem situation. The steps to follow are:

  • What I am going to learn: In this we face the central theme, area, subject or content that we want to learn.

  • Why do I need to learn it: Everything in life requires an explanation from the utility that represents to my life that content or that new experience to learn.

  • What are the possible learning routes: Today, thanks to the advances in the studies of educational sciences, humanities, arts, technologies and especially psychology and neurosciences, we know that there are different learning routes and it is essential to decide how I will approach the content or the situation from which they are going to learn. This allows us to develop learning autonomy.

  • What will be the expected result of my learning: Once we have selected the learning route and strategies we will make a projection of what we expect to achieve as goals or objectives.

2.- Development of thinking by comparison and contrast:

In this strategy we use situations or concepts similar in appearance but that in depth differ in their characteristics and results. This strategy of comparison and contrast in an attitudinal way allows us throughout our lives to establish and measure the benefits and consequences of our actions, situations and events that occur in our existence. This is done in the following way:

  • How the situations or concepts are similar: When facing the learning of something new, we look for a situation or concept that is similar and known through which the scaffolding of the new knowledge is carried out.

  • How they differ: Here we highlight the aspects in which each of the elements of analysis differ.

  • Conclusions of each concept: In this part we establish a detailed definition from my perception of what each concept or situation represents once I have analyzed it.

  • Proposal of something new:str Once the concepts and situations have been evaluated, a bridge is created between what has already been learned and what is new, even a new proposal can be created from the reflection made.

As can be seen, the purpose of this cognitive process is to ensure that people, especially from childhood, develop a deep, analytical, reflective thinking of every aspect of their lives. They should be able to dedicate a few minutes to the evaluation of the situations they have to solve and to evaluate the possible ways to do it. This method is a strategy for life.

Greetings @emimoron ❤️💕❤️

I think I actually fall into the second category which has to do with development of thinking by comparison and contrast. I really don't know maybe it's probably because I'm in the academic field (science student for that matter) but I still find this method as my best method when developing my thinking habit.

Thanks for sharing this great post with love from @hardaeborla and I hope you have a great day ahead ❤️💕❤️

Excellent, the ideal is to discover which is the route of development of the thinking that we use to enhance it and we grow from meaningful learning. If you have already discovered it, it is excellent that you can follow that route to strengthen your skills.

Greetings,
That is a cool article! I wonder if there are more kinds of thinking. I myself like to have discussions in my head about certain topics. Most of the time they result because of conversations I had with my friends. I recently found out that I always like to counter argue my friends even if they are completly right, just to put some light on the other side of the view. I wodner if this is also some kind of methodology?

Great article, I really enjoyed reading it! :)

Hello, yes there are many types of thinking, even the mind is a great network, there are so many neural connections and thinking abilities that we can enhance, we just have to learn where we are going. Meditation helps a lot to concentrate and organize our thoughts.

Hello @emimoron
Interesting topic. Psychology is something I like a lot, that's why I find it even more interesting.
The act of thinking involves other evolved mental faculties which in theory is what differentiates us from the rest of the (irrational) animals.
Thinking is a complex action, and it is definitely sustained in the brain, since it is there where the neuronal relationships are established for these to happen, hand in hand with memory, learning, among other things, it makes it easier for us to think.

Human beings are the most irrational animals. 😊

Very good and accurate comment especially because we have a straight brain that we must control because that is the most basic and also the one that makes us act without thinking. Maybe if we all learn to think this world would be a better place. Thanks for sharing.

I totally agree that the faculties of thought, as you have said, imply higher order cognitive processes, but like all capacities they must be developed and for that we must recognize how our mind operates and how we manage to build our internal framework of thoughts, only then we will be more mature and accurate in our assessments and positions.

Hi @emimoron, there is no doubt that thinking is a complex process, and it is certainly an activity that must be exercised, especially in children we must help them to develop an analytical thinking if we want them to be reflective and critical adults.

Hi @emiliomoron that's right we must learn to develop our thinking and helping the little ones to develop it is a very important task because in this way they manage to have an autonomous thinking process that becomes their life tool.

Hello @emimoron, really interesting and educating publication. I think I fall more within the first category though even if I am constantly trying to balance between the two categories, which is learning in order to grow and learn more, I am trying to add to the knowledge I have all the time.

Hello greetings @gbenga, the most important thing or the first step you already have and that is to recognize the way in which you perform your own thinking process and that is where we start to strengthen our processes. Drawing on experience and prior knowledge allows us to create cognitive bridges where we make new learning meaningful.

In essence , thinking helps to build our capacity to analyze and solve situations.

I believe it also helps us to tap into the innermost part of our human and bring out ideas that we never knew was there. Every human should put their brain to work.

It is evident that most of the greatest innovations in the world today is a result of people's thought.

For example, steem itself was an idea that came through the thought if someone. IF there was no thinker, there wouldn't have been a steemit, even blockchain itself is a product of thought.

Our way of life itself is based on the rationality of our thoughts and that in turn is balanced harmoniously with the way we learn either experientially or cognitively. Hence, it is necessary to learn how to think.
