"A well-chosen word can save us not only a hundred words, but a hundred thoughts. "
If there is one thing an entrepreneur must know, it is to communicate, and to do it effectively. It's not enough to communicate well, you have to do it better every day.
In a past post I talked about the importance of increasing our vocabulary and some of the habits that help me achieve that. You can read that post by giving. click here.
This time, I want to leave you with a few steps to help you continue to increase your vocabulary. We will break down the expression "Communicate Better ", which is one of the recurring themes in my written and audiovisual content.
Communicate Better ". When we read these words, what comes to mind? What does it mean? What's behind that expression? Join me in unpacking it a bit.
I must confess that this brief etymological analysis of this expression is the perfect excuse I had to describe to you my philosophy, methodology and objectives that I have established with "Communicate Better", my Integral Training Program in Communication.
🗣 1.- Define.
The first thing we are going to define is COMMUNICATE. To do this we use a dictionary or the internet to look up its definition.
We find that communicate comes from the Latin verb communicare which means to put in common, share or exchange. At the same time, communicare comes from communis which refers to what is common, to what is public. In conclusion, to communicate is to make our ideas, emotions, opinions, thoughts available to others; to make them public.
We could investigate more terms, for example: communication, communicates, communicative, communicated. But this I leave to you as an exercise.
🗣 2.- Synonyms
The second thing we will do is look for synonyms of the word we are researching. We continue with COMMUNICATE.
- Inform - Announce - Participate - Manifest - Notify - Reveal - Transmit - Propagate - Disseminate - Treat - Converse - Relate - Alternate.
With that we have a broader meaning and when it is time to write about the importance of communicating, we will have those terms in our brains to use as we see fit.
🗣 Better Defining.
Let's go now to the word BETTER. Same procedure, we go to the dictionary or the internet.
We find that better means: **better, more convenient, or preferable.
That is, if something is good, make it better. If you wrote a line well, now find a way to make it superior. If a verb conveys what you want, use it, but if there is another verb that communicates better, choose that one. Every piece of writing can be improved. Every piece of writing can be rewritten and perfected. This you are reading went through several corrections, but I am convinced that I could improve it even more.
But we must be careful with the latter, because if we keep revising, analyzing, correcting, polishing and so on, we will never publish that book, that article on our blog, we will never respond to a customer or send a sales letter, or we will never finish publishing a copy for our website, the video for our channel or even a comment we want to leave someone on social networks. We can improve, but we must also let go and let go, do not keep it.
🗣 3.- Play.
The last step to improve our vocabulary, is to look up the conjugation of the verbs we use. This is very useful to be exact in what we want to express. It also enriches our ideas and helps us to better illustrate something we wish to emphasize.
🔶 Summarizing:
3 steps to increase your vocabulary.
🗣 1. Use a dictionary to know the definition of a word. This allows us to be more aware of the real meaning of it and if it matches the one we want to express in our text..
🗣 2. Look for synonyms and antonyms of that word. The more alternatives we have, the better prepared we are to vary and avoid sounding repetitive. I also recommend you look up the definitions of those synonyms, this way you'll be more sure you're saying what you really mean.*.
🗣 3. Something very useful, although not obligatory, is to look up some conjugations of the verbs we use.
For example, the verb "comunicar ", conjugating it in the second person singular, in the imperative affirmative and adding the adjective "mejor " to it.
📝 I leave you an exercise you can do and leave the result in the comments. If you are up for it, it is the following:
Choose 5 words that have to do with entrepreneurship and sales. I leave you one: copywriting. Only four (4) are missing. Look up the definition of each one, then look up its synonyms and antonyms. If it's a verb, review its conjugation. Remember to leave it in a comment (You don't need all 5 words, one is enough).
I'll look forward to learning those words with you.
It's been a pleasure writing for you. I'll see you next time to continue learning how to communicate better.
