Nighttime accidents on the highways are common and a good percentage of them occur in vehicles that collide with another stopped vehicle or a truck.
In some cases this is due to the fact that the driver has fallen asleep, but almost always the reason is not clear, although specialists know it very well and it is called Road Hypnosis.
This is suffered by all drivers, both during the day and at night, and is the result of a rupture of communication between the eye and the brain, with the former remaining open and giving the passenger the sensation that he/she is awake.
On straight roads, the probability of accidents increases for this reason.
Road hypnosis begins 2 hours and a half approximately of travel, and reaches its maximum 15 minutes before that time has elapsed, for such reason the one who collides and is saved does not remember anything of what happened in that final lapse of time.
To know if he is not in this condition, the driver should ask himself if he remembers the places he has passed or the vehicles he has left behind.
To avoid this condition, the driver should stop every 2 hours and 15 minutes and have a coffee, walk 5 minutes or rest, according to the place where this time is fulfilled.
It is important if accompanied that they maintain constant communication with him so that the time to fall into hypnosis is delayed or does not appear, but without forgetting that a rest stop is mandatory in the time stipulated above.
Hello @joseph1956, how important it is for me to have found your post, now I know what has happened to me sometimes, if I can identify this "disconnection between the eye and the brain", I have experienced it before and now I see in your post that this It's called "road hypnosis." Due to this strange phenomenon, I have just stopped on the road every 2 or 3 hours to have a coffee and rest until I can continue.
knowing it now is very important to me

Hello @joseph1956
Road accidents have very high numbers precisely at night time, in my case I don't like to travel at night for some reason I avoid taking road at night. I did not know this concept of road hypnosis, but it makes a lot of sense as certainly our organism can show tiredness after a certain time behind the wheel.
Best regards, be well.

It is something little publicized, I do not understand the reason, because it should be part of a warning for drivers.

Greetings @ jose1956
The traffic statistics show it as you mentioned, many checks at night and quite a few people have died, I particularly have lived it, on one occasion I fell asleep driving and my wife woke me up because I was almost off the road.
Thank you very much for sharing your publication.

“Road Hypnosis”
I really like this term. Endless road has a very soothing nature to it. Everything starts blending together. You become relaxed. Tired. A very good post and a good reminder to take driving breaks.

Hello @joseph1956
Some time ago, about 16 years ago I had a car, I remember working a whole night, I went out and got in the car, very tired, I was going home alone, about 6 am, I had several days working at night, and this happened to me that you mention.
I was listening to music to avoid falling asleep, and still, with my eyes open, there was a moment when I crossed a highway, and I don't remember when I did it, I don't remember the traffic light. When I realized that, I stopped and walked, I could have caused an accident, or I could have been run over by a truck, anyway. It's a delicate thing.

Although it may seem strange, listening to music increases the possibility of this happening, since hearing becomes the main focus for the brain and sight takes a back seat.
