Today I have a publication that is based on research I have done, but at the same time I am in doubt since the recent announcement by Russia that it already has a vaccine for Covid-19. If this is true, the end of this whole complicated world situation is near, but, there are things that are not very clear to me, according to what I know and have been able to review, the process of creating a vaccine is complex.

At least, when the virus is already known, as in the case of influenza viruses, it takes approximately 6 months to manufacture it, in a process that includes several stages which, according to the World Health Organization (WHO) are the following:

• The identification of a new virus.
• Obtaining the vaccine strain (the so-called vaccine virus).
• Verification of the vaccine strain.
• Preparation of the reagents for testing the vaccine (reference reagents). Source

Stages that are carried out in different laboratories that are collaborators of the WHO, and can take a time of 2-3 months. After that, there is a stage of manufacturing, which also takes a few months (3-4 months), and then distribution, verification in each of the different countries that receive the vaccine, as there are specific rules for administering these in each part of the world. In some cases they are tested, which may even take a few weeks or months.

This that I mention is in relation to the vaccines of frequent use, like the "Anti-influenza", that already there is a partial identification of the virus, and what I do is to update its structure, since like any virus, it has the possibility of mutating, with slight changes in its structure of DNA, which facilitates the process of identification.

But, what in this particular announcement from Russia calls my attention is that being the Crown Virus a new know, which was totally unknown, already in a short time it managed to get a vaccine, that is, to carry out these processes that I mentioned before and not only that, without testing on animals first, as is what they usually do, testing on rats or mice, since genetically we have some similarity, and then they go on to test on humans, a small group, generally volunteers, and depending on these results is that they test on thousands of people, which will involve other months of studies.

Has Russia carried out these steps yet? I don't know, yesterday, August 12, 2020, as his deputy health minister, Oleg Gridnev, said, they registered the first Anti-Covid Vaccine, after conducting a trial on only 38 patients, in a study that began on June 18, 2020...

This leaves me with many doubts. The truth is that I understand the functioning of the immune system, and to think that only 38 people serve as a sample to know how the organism of the more than 7 billion inhabitants will react seems a little absurd, even more so considering that in every country in the world there are particularities that respond not only to different genetic origins but also to specific climatic conditions and even type of diet.

Could it be that they were already experimenting with the vaccine on thousands of people for a long time and that's why they dared to register the vaccine at once?

Because while it is true that we always have the United States, Germany or England as some references of progress, Russia is not left behind, it is a power, and I see a little difficult that they want to risk making such a move without first being sure.

But the WHO has not made any record of studies on thousands of people, which would be the third and final stage? Or is it that these trials on thousands of people have already been carried out under less than ideal conditions?, for example on prisoners, which would not be the first time that something similar has happened somewhere in the world

It only remains to wait, in this alone I have brought some of my concerns around this issue, as a scientist that I am. But if this vaccine really works, and as Russia says, that in October it would be carrying out massive vaccinations, the solution is welcome.
