Importance of good commercial relations with the powers

Hello friends of Project HOPE, Good trade relations with world powers are not just a matter of diplomacy or foreign policy, they are a fundamental pillar for the economic and social development of any country.

It is no secret that we are in a world that is increasingly interconnected, in which economies depend on each other, therefore, maintaining strong ties with great powers can make the difference between growth and stagnation. But why are these relationships so important and what happens when they deteriorate?, I will share my opinion on this.

First, we must understand that economic powers, such as the United States, China or the European Union, not only have great financial power, but also significant influence on global markets.

When a country maintains good commercial relations with these powers, doors are opened to investments, advanced technology and access to larger markets. This, in turn, generates employment, drives innovation and improves the quality of life of citizens. For example, many of the products we consume daily, from electronic devices to medicines, are the result of trade agreements and technology transfers with more developed countries.

However, when these relationships become strained or broken, the consequences can be serious. Trade sanctions, high tariffs or reduced trade directly affect the local economy. Companies lose access to key markets, the prices of imported products increase and, in many cases, shortages are generated. But the most worrying thing is that these decisions, made in spheres of power, end up affecting the common citizen. The people are the ones who pay the price for bad political decisions, while leaders are usually far from the direct consequences.

A clear example of this is trade tensions between countries that, instead of resolving differences through dialogue, opt for extreme measures such as sanctions or restrictions. These actions not only damage the economy on both sides (Especially on the weaker side), but also create a climate of uncertainty that discourages investment and growth. Who wins in these situations? Nobody. We all lose, but especially those who depend on a job, a small business or basic products that are now scarce or more expensive.

Therefore, it is crucial for leaders to understand that business relationships are not a power game, but rather a tool to improve people's lives. Diplomacy and dialogue must take precedence over impulsive or emotional decisions. Because at the end of the day, what is at stake is not just a country's economy, but the well-being of millions of people who trust their leaders to make the right decisions.

This post arises as a reflection of a big problem that is happening right now between the US government and Colombia.
