Hello friends of Project HOPE, I hope everyone is well. Today I want to reflect on an economic topic that gives a lot to think about and says a lot about how other countries, and we ourselves, perceive our nation: the amount of dollars that enter Colombia through remittances far exceeds foreign direct investment. This means that Colombians living abroad send more money to their families than international investors bring to the country.
This, on the one hand, reflects the effort and sacrifice of thousands of Colombians who left their land looking for better opportunities. Through remittances, they support not only their families, but also a significant part of the country's economy. But on the other hand, it raises a disturbing question: why isn't there more foreign direct investment?
We can look for answers in many factors, but I think one of the most important has to do with trust. When a nation is under a socialist government that makes unpredictable decisions, or when the rules of the game are constantly changing for those who want to invest, it is logical that international investors think twice before betting their capital in that country. And it's not just about political decisions; It is a combination of uncertainty, lack of legal guarantees, and, often, an environment that seems more hostile than friendly to investment.
Of course, this is not a recent phenomenon. However, the contrast between remittances and foreign investment highlights a worrying reality: the country's economic dynamism seems to be sustained more by the efforts of Colombians who work abroad than by the ability to attract large investment projects that generate employment and development. long term.
This also forces us to reflect on the impact that government policies have on our international reputation. If the signals we send as a country do not generate trust, we not only scare away investors, but we also lose opportunities for progress that could benefit everyone.
It is clear that we need a change of direction. I hope that those who make decisions understand the importance of generating an environment of stability and opportunities, both for those of us who live in the country and for those from outside who wish to contribute to the development of Colombia. Because, in the end, trust is the most valuable capital that a country can have. Don't you think so?
