There are three things that will save a driver in winter time:
- fit the car with winter tyres
- practice and learn how to control the car in difficul situations, so it won't be a surprise when it happens on open roads
- KEEP THE SAFETY DISTANCE.
Nothing will help if there's no safety distance from the cars in front. And no practice will help if the car can't brake or steer because tyres have no grip (hence, winter tyres).
And yes, practice is highly necessary. Do it every time it's possible, and consider taking a safe driving course - the cost will pay back forever in driving experience, safety, and avoided accidents.
