Older Adults and COVID-19

While it is true that we have already written about the effects of the pandemic on education, on relationships, on singleness, but what about older adults? We are talking about a percentage of the population who are past their reproductive years and have seen their children grow up, sometimes grandchildren if they were able to reproduce, or those who reached old age alone. In particular, I believe that they have been one of the most affected age groups and have even been vulnerable to the systemic diseases that accompany them.

A US newspaper reports that the statistics are grim. It is said that 95% of deaths from the virus in the US have been among people over the age of 50. And although the number of cases is not so high, as it is higher for those below that age range, the consequences of infection are dire.

For experts, this virus has been lethal due to the conditions of the elderly, as at least 80% of older adults suffer from a chronic systemic disease. These include diabetes, obesity, sedentary lifestyles, hypertension, pulmonary, circulatory and cardiac diseases, which are obviously complicated by coronavirus infection.

There is also the proven weakness of the immune system, which, as the years go by, deteriorates and makes them prone to infections, and the response is not adequate to fight them.

The isolation has also hit them so hard that some of them are in depression. And in this regard, we must remember that they are not as receptive to new technologies as we or the newer generations may be.

A UN report reports that the elderly suffer more violence and neglect during the COVID-19 pandemic. This information has been promoted by the Independent Expert on the enjoyment of all human rights by older persons, Ms Claudia Mahler.

*"Distressing reports from old people's homes in different parts of the world have shown neglect, isolation and lack of adequate services, such as health, social and legal services," Mahler said in a statement.

For the expert, these measures taken during quarantine have increased the numbers of gender-based violence, abuse and mistreatment of older people who are either in the care of family members or in care homes.

This is a subject that inevitably touches our heartstrings. I read them!

The government should look into it and try not to neglect the elderly because they are vary prone to covid19 and other illness.

States have prioritised them in terms of vaccination. But sometimes it's not enough because they are affected in other ways, such as care... cheers
