The Rise of Biodegradable Plastics

Biodegradable plastics appear to be the only feasible solution to the problem of pollution of the planet by plastics. In contrast with traditional plastics that may still be present in the environment after several hundreds of years, biodegradable plastics are those products that must degrade in a shorter period of time and under certain specified conditions.

These novel materials are biodegradable and made from natural resources like corn, potatoes, and sugarcanes. The biodegradable types of plastics can degrade through microorganisms, moisture and oxygen into natural products that include water, carbon dioxide and biomass and this without forming any toxic by products.

Currently, some industries are moving towards taking biodegradable plastics as their products such as a packaging material for their products, agricultural uses and consumer products among others. For instance, packaging materials and other Junk foods products such as cutlery and bags that are used by companies are now made from compostable materials intended for single use hence they do not harm the environment.

Nevertheless, it is crucial to acknowledge that the use of biodegradable plastics is a solid model only in case of appropriate disposal and composting systems availability. Failure to provide suitable amenities for these items is likely to lead to their intended biodegradation but instead they will continue to litter the environment.

Since biodegradable plastics are still in development and the advancement in technology and structure is being enhanced, then there will be a serious reduction of accumulation of plastic wastes hence leading to a better future of conservation.
