Lots of people want to be respected, but they forget that respect is earned. True respect cannot be forced, because if you apply force it's no longer respect - it becomes fear. And that's where many people get it twisted, because they misconstrue respect and fear.
The reason why society respect people is because of courageous things that these people have done or continue to do. Hence, if you want to be respected, think about a very courageous thing, and get it done. People will naturally respect the courage it took for you to do it.
Here's an example, people naturally respect military men - because when you see a soldier walking down the street on his uniform, he commands instant respect, without attempting to bully anybody. Even as he gently goes his way, he commands your respect.
And that's because people subconsciously respect the fact that he risks his life everyday for what he believes in - and that takes courage. Also, look at great businessmen know have been known to be successful - people respect them, because of the courage it takes to put so much money at risk all the time.
Hence, when you break it down, you'll see that gaining respect is about you going out there and taking those calculated risks. When your society, close friends and family, know that you're a courageous person, you will gain their respect naturally. And remember - nobody respects a fearful and timid person.
Respect is certainly earned and not demanded, courage is what is required to naturally gain respect from people without struggle.
