Try to answer this question without thinking too hard: Why did you join Steemit? I venture to say that it was because of the ease in which I was able to make money (which is converted through the cryptocurrencies, which by the way... here are quite diverse) through what you write and publish, in addition to being able to make money through interactions (comments and curation in general). Something that no other place can provide, at least not with the depth and naturalness that is found here.
But, is that just what matters? I mean, the aforementioned motivations - in some way - are the main factor (and there is no point in denying that), but is just a search for money worth it? When I started my journey here, I need to confess that I was - literally - seduced by this opportunity to make money... However, what made me stay here was not just that because the pleasure I get when I write, goes much more than figures and financial profits.
Just like any other user, I joined and continue here also for the money (which, by the way, is a great reward for all the ideas, thoughts and concepts that I have had the pleasure of sharing here), but I am very pleased to have found a platform where I can publish the contents that I write and that are having a greater view and it is through this that I can notice that my texts are being more appreciated. This is a pleasure that no money can buy, because it is a personal achievement.
Money matters and contrary to what many people think, it also brings happiness. But it is not the reason for me to stay here, besides the pleasure of writing and publishing my texts, I have the privilege of visiting many parts of the world (and thus, a little piece of the most diverse places on the planet) through the posts that are published by other members and this definitely can't be achieved so easily on other platforms.
The idea of pluralizing culture, customs, food, drinks, places, clothes and many other examples is, in my opinion, something that I find fascinating. In addition, it is possible to see this place as an immense "cultural exchange", where it is also possible to make friends with people from all over the world because it is a democratic space that embraces all peoples. This union is a crucial proof that technology connects us in unimaginable ways... Something that some years ago was not possible (nor imagined).
Thinking of this place only as a way to earn "easy" money is, in my opinion, the mistake of many people, because they end up taking advantage of the other opportunities and advantages that this space within the blockchain has to offer, such as the chance to acquire knowledge (because the amount of posts published here daily is huge) and also, the chance to teach some of what you know to other people. It is a "game" that can be classified as a "win-win" and that only benefits everyone who knows what they want.

Money was a factor while I joined. But now its all about reading and interacting with the fellow writers.

@wiseagent in simple words I like to say , YES money matters. Most of the people join this platform to earn some money so that they can help their families and their daily expenses. Apart from that it's a good platform to make new friends also from different parts of the world.

People joined steemit for different reasons, some join for the pleasure and fun of sharing their contents, some join in order to meet others and some others joined so they could make something even if it a penny to add to their daily livelihood (times are hard) I do not consider any of these reasons as being wrong personally.

Hello friend, very interesting your question, the truth is that at first people come for the opportunity to produce something, I speak from my reality and the reality of many Latinos, specifically Venezuelans. Today for no one is a secret the situation that many of us go through and thanks to these platforms many can eat and feed their families. Obviously after one is already part of this great community other things develop, for example, you meet more people, more realities, you acquire more knowledge and also the ability to write and analyze anything.
I think it's a skill that develops only if you put it into practice, with me that's what happened, I think many people end up getting affection and love for what they do inside the platform, or at least it has happened to me. There are other great opportunities, in short, I think there are many advantages beyond the economic which is also important and fundamental.

Hello @wiseagent
This is an interesting question. In a way I think we have all come to this platform with the intention of having an additional economic income, for many it has even become the only way, however. Getting here and staying here are different things. Because the learning path to a good income can be slow. Much more than money must be found. Because even from well paid jobs people get tired and leave.
The points you mention are important.
It is a sharing of knowledge, you learn a lot by reading other publications.
And you enjoy sharing what you have to say. And of course, money is important, because spending hours on something just for pleasure would be difficult to sustain.
