The job/skill debate

Yesterday, a friend of mine sent me an application letter written by his wife. I think she asked him to send it to me for a proper correction.

I've never written a job application before but I guess it's something I'm supposed to know how to do as an adult, I guess. I have no clue what is accepted or not accepted.

I asked him what she was up to at the time and apparently, she had been handling his blog which had been pretty lucrative. So why in the world was she searching for a job?

I don't know how things are done in other countries, however, in mine, it makes no sense to work for a private firm unless it's one of the big companies with international connections.

I currently have a friend working almost 12 hours a day for a microfinance bank. She plays the role of receptionist, accountant, customer service, and personal assistant for only about $100 per month.

The job my friend's wife is applying for is no different from what my friend does. So why is it such a privilege?

I hid no words from him when I told him it was not a wise decision if the blog was doing well. Digital skills are valuable in this knowledge age.

What's more interesting about this age we're in is the fact that certification and diplomas are not always necessary. What's important is knowledge.

Can you do what you just said you can do? Can you deliver?

To an extent, I don't think university degrees are of much relevance anymore. Unless your degree comes with enough knowledge and experience in that field.

Another point I mentioned to my friend to bring up with his wife is a change in the field or at least knowledge in relevant fields. I suggested Data Research or something leading towards the social sciences or even core science.

He was pleased by my suggestion but complained that his wife was not inclined towards that aspect of knowledge. I'm not in a position to push further so I dropped the conversation there.

I realized from interactions with people that there's so much I don't know and there's a lot the world is interested in at the moment. By availing myself of a lot of information I've been able to think up an action plan.

I think the future looks bright for tech-inclined individuals. And unlike the times of my parents, there's no need for a paper qualification. I think this makes things a lot easier for people who can't afford many things but desire knowledge.

I sure hope my friend's wife takes my advice, but if she doesn't I'm glad I could help with editing her job application.
