Matilda Lutz Slips Into Red Sonja's Chain-Mail Bikini For Reboot Movie
"Red Sonja" is finally getting a movie. Millennium Media announced on Aug. 23 that the movie, based on the comic-book character of the same name, will star Matilda Lutz as Red Sonja alongside "Batwoman" star Wallis Day and "The Umbrella Academy" actor Robert Sheehan. Millennium also confirmed the movie is currently in production.
In case the name doesn't ring any bells for you, here's a refresher. Red Sonja is a comic-book character who first appeared in Marvel's Conan the Barbarian series from 1973 to 1995. In 2005, she moved over to Dynamite Comics, where they eventually rebooted the character's backstory. They've consistently published Red Sonja series since then. Red Sonja famously wears a chain-mail bikini with thigh-high boots and long gloves. More recent issues have also portrayed the character as bisexual.
There's one previous "Red Sonja" movie, a 1985 flick starring Brigitte Nielsen and Arnold Schwarzenegger. Rose McGowan was once attached to a new film but had to back out after injuries. The project had been stuck in developmental hell since then.
"Red Sonja" is directed by M.J. Bassett from a script by Joey Soloway and Tasha Huo. "I've wanted to make a Red Sonja movie since I was a teenager — she has been a powerful presence for me and a character that I have always wanted to bring to the screen with my own voice and vision," Bassett said in a statement to Deadline. "When I met Matilda Lutz, I knew she had all the magic I was looking for and could see the complexity and depth she would bring to Sonja."
