Being a star in major league baseball comes with its perks. The attention, the glory, people love you, kids want your autograph and the money ain't bad either. However, there is typically a path that most superstar baseball players take when they get called up for the first time. The player emerges as a star and is locked into one team for a six year window before hidden free agency. During that time it's possible that the player ends up getting traded so his team can get assets back before he reaches free agency. Once a player hits open market for the first time, they're typically between the ages of 27-29.

Now, there are plenty of exceptions that number as sometimes players take longer to get promoted to the show. Sometimes they get called up an extremely young age as well, end up hitting free agency at 26 or younger like Bryce harper. Other times, they begin their careers in different parts of the world and end up signing into major league baseball. Regardless, once that player hits free agency they typically sign one more big multi-year contract and secure their money and that usually lasts into their 30s. They may sign a couple more short-term deals towards the end of their careers and then they retire.

Once again plenty of exceptions to the norm but that is the usual way that a star player's career goes. One of those aforementioned players is the Japanese two-way sensation Shohei Ohtani. Ohtani began playing professional baseball in Japan at just age 18.

From 2013 to 2017, Ohtani dominated the league on route to multiple all-star games and an MVP award all while pitching and hidden. He would ask to be posted as a free agent and became eligible to sign into major league baseball in 2018. Ohtani ultimately ended up signing with the Angels and thus his big league career had begun at age 24. He has become one of the well-known faces of baseball since he became a big leaguer and is currently enjoying his best season to date and might be on track to win the MVP award and will garner some cy young votes as well.

There is one problem though similar to baseball's best player over the last eight seasons or so Mike trout Ohtani plays for the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim. Now, they are an organization that is cemented in mediocrity and they've arguably wasted the majority of Mike trout's prime of his career. They are a team that has developed a decent offense over the past couple of seasons but man their pitching struggles have kept them from achieving success. When you mix that in with a trout injury in 2021 the main bright spot has been Otani's historic campaign.

Otani's contract is set to expire after the 2023 season which will be an arbitration year, that means that the angels only have control of him for two more seasons. While Mike Trout did agree to sign long term with the ball club, there's no guarantee that Shohei will do the same after all he left his home country to come play in America. So, surely he wants to win while he's in the big leagues. Unless Angels are sure they can extend him, it may be time to consider dealing him away.

There is no limit to what kind of prospect capital the angels could receive in return for a player who is often compared to babe Ruth. One team that could be a potential suitor is the San francisco giants. The giants have been one of the most exciting teams this season and have consistently found ways to win games. The fact that they currently lead the national league west which features one of the most star-studded lineups of all time. I'm talking about the dodgers of course. That shows just how talented the 2021 giants are.
