Leptocorisa Oratorius Fabricius | Walang Sangit

in hive-177276 •  4 years ago  (edited)

I found one type of insect that is an important pest for cultivated crops, especially rice. Known as the Latin name Leptocorisa Oratorius Fabricius, this insect is easily recognized by its elongated shape, measuring about 2 cm in size, gray-brown in color, and has a "trunk" (proboscis) to suck out plant fluids. Walang sangit (local name) is a member of the Hemiptera order (true ladybugs).

These insects suck plant fluids from flower stalks (paniculae) and also rice fruit juices which are still in the mature stage of milk, causing the plants to become nutrient deficient and yellow (chlorosis), and slowly weaken, their form of defense, which is emitting a stinging aroma so it is called "sangit"). Actually, not only stink bugs give off this scent, but also many other Alydidae members.
