Everyone knows that our environment is bad, but often people do not understand - how much. Over the past 100 years of industrialization and spontaneous urbanization, a very important change has occurred on the planet: the human environment - sensory and contemplative - has become aggressive for the senses, which are adapted to the natural environment.
How do plants live? From the school curriculum, everyone knows that plants absorb carbon dioxide from the air and give off oxygen. This occurs in the process of photosynthesis, which takes place in the green parts of the plant only in the light, in the daytime.
Plants, unlike other living organisms, have the unique ability to capture and absorb the radiant energy of the sun, which is used by plants to break down the water molecule into oxygen and hydrogen ions. Then, as a result of chemical reactions, plants use hydrogen and carbon dioxide absorbed from the ambient air to synthesize various organic compounds (carbohydrates). Oxygen is released into the atmosphere as a by-product of photosynthesis.
The main organ of the plant that carries out photosynthesis is the leaf. Plants absorb carbon dioxide from the air and release oxygen through tiny openings on the leaf surface called stomata. For photosynthesis to occur most efficiently, the stomata must be open. That is, for photosynthesis to proceed in the optimal mode, the plant must receive a sufficient amount of light energy, water and carbon dioxide.
In this case, it is very important that the outflow of photosynthetic products from the leaves occurs at a sufficient rate, otherwise the accumulation of carbohydrates will slow down the process of photosynthesis. For this reason, most plants grow better with alternating light and dark periods, since under these conditions the products of photosynthesis accumulated in the light are removed from the leaves into other plant organs in the dark.
Breathing is a process by which carbohydrates formed as a result of photosynthesis combine with oxygen and oxidize, thus releasing energy. During respiration, oxygen and carbohydrates are consumed by the plant to obtain energy necessary for the synthesis of other substances required for the growth and development of plants.
Plants have a calming effect on most people with their beauty. People feel relaxed up close or when tending to plants. Greening the interiors of offices and workplaces increases productivity and reduces staff fatigue. Why is this possible? Back in the thirties of the last century, scientists discovered substances secreted by plants, which are usually called "phytoncides" - they kill or inhibit the growth and development of pathogenic bacteria and fungi.
Possessing biological activity, phytoncides can have a versatile effect on the human and animal organism. Phytoncides have a beneficial effect on the emotional state of a person, normalize heart rate and blood pressure, and actively participate in metabolism.
