Long, long ago, many-miles-aways in the suitable sounding Eldermere, a peaceful village by the sea – there was a story about the Forgotten Sea. This body of water was so extensive that it could hardly be seen to the other end of the map and therefore unknown and it is interesting that the inhabitants of the village literally believed that this island had a rich fund at the bottom of the sea, which could be found by anyone who dared to try.
So a young woman named Elara, was raised on a man’s stories. He was an old pirate once, happy while reliving his days at the sea where he’d seen mermaids and sunken ships. While people of Eldermere can be skeptical, Elara had faith in reality of the legends. In her young and tender heart she burned the desire to reveal the mysteries of the Forgotten Sea and embark on a journey of a lifetime.
There she left on one morning with only a small compass which belonged to her grandfather and a tiny wooden boat into the water. The nearer she got to the coastline the water looked green and there was a growing wave like motion to it the farther she went the color of the water changed to blue so with the power of her hands, with the strokes she took on the water she felt alive, freedom for the salt in her mouth.
Days were changing into nights and nights into days as she floated further into the unknown ocean, using stars and ocean murmur as her blanket and alarm clock, then one night as she was looking at the moon shining on the sea surface, she saw sparkles in the water. With her heart pounding passionately she peered over the brink of the boat and saw multicoloured tracts of corals and vibrant schools of fish, that swam as if in the water lacquer.
But it was on the third night that she was tastefully exposed to something unprecedented. And at the midnight of the full moon, the ocean got illuminated, and a shipwreck of historical times came into the surface and the boat with rust growing on it and covered in algae might have been something from another world. They say intrigued, Elara using the available resources fashioned herself some diving gear and went under the water into the water.
As she moved closer she came upon chests filled with gold coins and jewels and artifacts which must have belonged to a forgotten civilization. Of them a beautiful ornamental mirror was included so when she looked at it, it would show her likeness and her grandpa’s’ thrilling experiences. I saw nursing homes portray him, and the things that he used to enjoy; she could actually hear his laughter and the stories he would share with her as a child. A beaming of moisture filled her eyes: this was a greater wealth than gold; it was an identity.
She came back as Elara with a room full of joy in her heart. She learned that the Forgotten Sea was not a place which was merely forgotten and useless but one where stories and memories were kept. She went back to Eldermere and told every one present what she had learned from the leper king, a recount that was punctuated with calls for the villagers to remember that the sea was not only a source of wealth but also of history.
By then, the legend of the Forgotten Sea changed the village’s name, and brought back the enthusiasm of adventure and imagination. Having become a storyteller, she made common the history of sailing to the extent to which the descendants would also look for their own and keep exploring the secrets of the bottom of the ocean.
