Electricity has become an unavodable force in everyone's life and our daily activities are so intertwine with it that even a few minutes without power can cause significant disruptions. In Peshawar Pakistan we experience up to 16 hours of load shedding every 24 hours offering a unique perspective on living with limited acces to electricity. This contest invites us to reflect on the importance of electricity and imagine life without it.
How Would Your Daily Life and Work Life Be Without Electricity from Now Onwards?
Daily Life:
Without electricity our routines would drastically change.
- Morning Routine: We would rise with the sun and perform morning activities in natural light. Preparing breakfast would involve using wood fired stoves or gas burners.
- Communication: Modern communication tools like smartphones and the internet would be unusable. We would rely on letters landlines and face to face conversations.
- Entertainment: Electronic entertainment would be replaced by books board games and outdoor activities.
- Household Chores: without electrical appliances chores like washing clothes cleaning and cooking would become more labor intensive and time consuming.
Work Life:
The professional sphere would also face significant disruptions:
- Office Work: Computers printer and other office equipment would be out of commission pushing us back to pen
and paper documentation and manual filing system.
- Manufacturing: Industries relying on electrical machinery would struggle leading to reduced production efficiency and increased manual labor.
- Healthcare: The quality of healthcare would decline due to the unavailability of medical equipment like diagnostic machines and life-support systems.
- Transportation: Electric trains and subways would be unusable and even fuel powered vehicles would be impacte due to the lack of electricity for fuel stations and maintenance.
What Kind of Equipment Would Be Required to Live a Hassle-Free Life?
Adapting to life without electricity Would require alternative tools and equipment:
- Lighting: Oil lamps candles and solar-powered lights for illumination after sunset.
Cooking: Wood or coal stoves and portable gas stoves for meal preparation.
Heating and Cooling: Woodburning stoves for heating and hand fans or mechanical fans for cooling.
Water Supply: Manual pumps and wells for accessing water.
Communication: Postal services hand-crank or solar powered radios and telegraph system.
Transport: Bicycles horse drawn carriages and sailboats.
Tools: Hand operated tools for farming carpentry and other trades.
Would You Be Able to Cope with Life Without Electricity?
Coping with life without electricity would be challenging especially given our reliance on it. However it is possible with the following considerations:
- Adaptation: The initial adaptation would be difficult but humans are resilient. Communities would support each other and develop new routine.
- Skills: Learning skills like manual farming cooking with fire and using traditional tools would be essential.
- Community: Strong community bonds and cooperation would be crucial for sharing resources and knowledge.
- Innovation: Necessity drives innovation. People would develop new technologie and methods to improve efficiency and C omfort without electricity.
