Greetings everyone you all are welcome to my blog today thanksu dear friend @abdullahw2 for organizing this contest.
What is the date of Independence Day in your country and from whom your country took independence?
The Independence Day in my country Nigeria is 1st of October; Nigeria became independent from the British colonial rule since the 1st of October, 1960 and it was no easy having gone through different movements and leaders among the nationalists include some individuals as Nnamdi Azikiwe; Obafemi Awolowo; Ahmadu Bello.
Similarly, and after several years of agitation, bargaining, and political struggle my country Nigeria was liberated from British rule and the first of October, the date the country gained its independence has remained significant as a recognized holiday to remember the struggle that was made in order to get the country independent.
Who is a prominent national figure associated with your country's independence, and why are they important?
A few of the national figures in my country Nigeria include Nnamdi Benjamin Azikiwe who is also known as ‘Zik of Africa’ an ILORIN MAN who was a preeminent Nigerian nationalist and also the first President of the federal republic of Nigeria.
Through the participating in various nationalist movements whereby he fought for independence, advocating for the freedom of Nigerians Nnamdi Benjamin Azikiwe went further in supporting independence by using his journalism and political skills to get in touch with people and allowing Nigerians to govern themselves as he fought for their rights and freedom, so he led and supported the ideals of independence with his leadership, vision and passion for independence so he remains one Nigeria’s revered heroes.
Do the people of your country perform any special activities on your country's independence day? Tell us about them.
In my country Nigeria people celebrate the country’s Independence Day through various special activities and events such as; parades, cultural shows, traditional dance, raising of Nigerian flag, fire works displays and many events where government officials and many Nigerians give speeches the colours green and white are also worn by many Nigerians while some attend church services, and also undertake community service as they celebrate independence Day.
Also, schools, businesses and all forms of organizations also celebrate the day and arrange their events as well as activities to display Nigerian culture, tradition and achievements. As such, Nigeria Independence Day remains a day that is so special and of great pride to all the people of Nigeria.
Why do you think independence is compulsory for a nation or country?
For me i think independence is really important to a nation as it gives a country freedom, authority, and decision making power on their executive actions and they will always be a mere colony, which has no control over their future, but instead will have to adhere to the policies of the colonizing nation as well as economy and culture. Independence gives a nation the dignity, individual identity and self-rule essential to give its citizens a sense purpose and unity.
So this also helps the country to obtain with other nations in an equal platform, foster partnership, understanding and cordial relations so in conclusion independence is an essential foundation and fundamental to nationalism and economic growth, and development.
