If you saw someone being punched in the face by a large person, what would you do? If you’re like most people, you’d try to stop the person from getting hurt—or at least get them away from the bully until they have time to escape. If you saw someone crying in the corner after being publicly humiliated, what would you do? If you’re like most people, you’d offer some kind of comfort or at least try to make sure the person wasn’t alone so they weren’t harmed or killed by someone else.

Why I find these memes offensive
As someone who has struggled with mental health for about half of my life, these memes are in poor taste. Many have tried to laugh off depression and anxiety, but there’s nothing funny about being depressed. Laughter doesn’t always turn away sorrow, it doesn’t heal all wounds; sometimes laughter just hurts more than it helps, so stop pretending like mental illness is something that can be joked about.
Anyone About Their Mental Illness
Those who deal with mental illnesses know how challenging it can be and how much strength it takes to cope with their disorder. Do not belittle or make jokes about someone’s mental illness, and if you know someone who suffers from one, please have patience with them. Your understanding could mean everything to them. You may not understand what they are going through, but that doesn’t give you a reason to laugh at them for it. Everyone has different strengths and weaknesses; we all deal with things in our own way. So next time you hear someone making fun of someone else for having a mental illness, stand up for that person. Be an advocate for those who suffer in silence because they are too afraid of being made fun of.
Difference Between Physical and Mental Illness?
Physical illness can make us feel like we have no energy and our lives are overwhelming, but that’s just how it feels. If you break your leg or get cancer, your body won’t let you take on too much activity because it simply can’t handle it. It will also shut itself down at night when you try to sleep so that it has enough time to heal itself. But with mental illness, that balance doesn’t exist.
Why do we joke about mental illnesses when the effects are REAL?
When we make fun of people with mental illnesses, it damages us all. People who are different are more likely to be victims of violence and more likely to commit suicide, which means joking about them gives society an easy way out. But making light of these issues only normalizes intolerance and perpetuates ignorance and hate. If you think someone may be suffering from any type of mental illness, do not judge them; try to see past their exterior and help them get better treatment if necessary.
Stop the Stigma
Mental health disorders, such as depression and anxiety, are serious medical conditions that often require just as much intervention and treatment as physical ailments. However, many people do not take mental health disorders seriously; for some reason, we tend to believe that depression isn’t actually an illness—just a state of mind.
How can you help to fight stigma against mental illness?
The best way to help fight stigma against mental illness is to educate others about it. A great place to start your own education on mental health issues and disorders is with NAMI, which offers seminars and educational materials for both patients and their family members. Another great resource that offers information on many different mental illnesses (including PTSD) as well as resources for additional treatment can be found at Psych Central.
Does it ever get better?
Many of us will experience one or more episodes of mental illness in our lifetime. Occasionally these gests can be enervating. More often than not, they are misunderstood by others and make us feel isolated, anxious and depressed. What if I told you that there was hope? That help was available? That people were willing to hear? There are no easy answers, but people who are struggling with a mental health problem deserve to know that help is available. Everyone deserves to feel better.
