Today I will share with you a tragic story that happened to me in my childhood.

1 Picture 1 Story

Childhood is a realm of adventure, play and imagination. When we were children, we used to do things without thinking about the consequences, so to speak, there is no headache. Such a memory is still deeply scarred in my mind. Later I heard more details about this incident from my mother.

My cousin and I were two mischievous companions growing up together. The open fields of the village, branches of trees and dry jute together with other things were the world of our toys. Sometimes I used to make swords and fight with jute chalk and sometimes I used to make toy stoves and I used to play with cars bought for 5 rupees all day long. But what happened that day was completely unexpected and shocking. One winter morning we two cousins were playing with jute chalk. Everyone was working outside. Like all children, we loved playing with fire as children. When we invented a new fire game, we thought it would look pretty cool when the smoke came out. So we both gathered a pile of dry jute and set it on fire. At first there was a gentle smoke, then suddenly the unexpected happened, i.e. the fire started to burn. We did not yet have the capacity to understand the danger this fire could cause.

Our playground was next to our majo uncle's house. The uncles had houses built with tin roofs and thatched fences. As it was winter, there was a lot of dry straw, wood, and dry jute strewn around, which aunty left to dry in the sun. Due to the intensity of the wind, the fire immediately spread to the straw fence of the uncle's house. Within seconds the fire turned into a raging flame before anyone knew it. And we ran in panic looking for a way to escape. At that time, everyone in the house rushed towards us. But by that time what was to be was done. Most of the house was burnt. The thatched fence and tin rice of the uncle's house were covered in smoke. The fire quickly spread throughout the house. Everyone arranged buckets, pitchers, and shoulder-to-shoulder water. Finally, after many attempts, everyone succeeded in extinguishing the fire.

We were sitting in a corner in fear of the horror of the incident. I thought, this time we will be thrown out of the house or will be scolded a lot. But our uncle, whose house was burnt down, surprisingly did not scold us but just sighed. He said, "My house is burnt, but my nephews have been kept healthy by Allah Ta'ala. I thank Allah."

We learned that day, fire is not a game. I saw with my own eyes what a moment's carelessness could cause grave danger.

Both of us changed a lot after this incident. Played sports, but never played with fire or anything dangerous. After some time uncle rebuilt his house again. But no one could forget that day.

That house is no more. Uncles have built a house here. That one mistake remains a great lesson in our lives that one should never neglect fire and never play with it.
