It is said that unknown things should not be touched, using them is a big mistake.

Today I want to tell you an incident from my life in which the innocence, ignorance, poverty and the deep impact of the environment of a simple and ordinary person is visible.

This story also proves the same thing. And tells us how a person coming from a rural background does not know much about urban traditions and their eating habits and how he reacts with surprise when he sees them.

Those days I was working in the health department, often teams from different countries and some World Health Organization teams used to come to review our work and tell us about new programs.

My senior officials had given me the responsibility of staying with the foreign guests and team members, arranging their food and drinks and staying with them during their stay.

That day also a team from the World Health Organization had come to review the polio eradication program, there were about 8 members in this team, all of them were representatives of different western countries.

I had to arrange for their food and for this I had put some of my colleagues on duty.

All the food was prepared and served by the cooks of the government guest house, our job was only to give instructions to the staff who were preparing and serving the food.

And in the meantime when something else was needed my colleagues would arrange to get that thing. Everything went on in a very systematic manner, there was no interruption in all this.

8 members of the World Health Organization and high officials of our department had already gathered for dinner on the dining table of the guest house and were discussing some topics before eating. In the middle of the discussion some foreign guests took out small vials/bottles of alcohol to pour in their glasses and left the rest of the alcohol right there on the table.

One of my colleagues Mahesh Singh who was from a rural background and had never seen such alcohol before, so he was very curious to see this and was filled with surprise.

After the guests had their meal, I did not know when Mahesh Singh picked up all the remaining bottles of liquor and filled them in a glass and drank it, as he did not know that the liquor had very high alcohol content and concentration. So he fainted after drinking such a concentrated amount of liquor at once.

I asked him "Dear brother , what have you done?"

Mahesh said "Sir, I did not know that this liquor looked so little but was so dangerous, I have drunk a lot of liquor in my village."

We took Mahesh to the hospital and got him treated there, only then he recovered. Even today people from the department make fun of his ignorance.

Whenever he is asked to do such a thing again, he shivers remembering the incident and swears that he will never touch such liquor, about which he does not know beforehand.
