Media Freedom in Your country

in hive-180106 •  last year

Media is one driving force in any nation. A lot of people are against using the media to spread any form of news unless it is from a government-owned media outlet, some allow other media outlets and people to share whatever news they want to share without any restrictions, while others implement some restrictions. Before I continue, one thing I want to say is abiding by whatever laws there are in your native country or country of residence is best so as to live peacefully. That said, so let's begin.

Government regulations on media content: Are there restrictions on certain topics?

I am from Nigeria, and one thing that I can say is that almost everyone is a news reporter. Note that I didn't use the word journalist because most of them didn't practice at all but they are free to share news and events from their phones to their social media channels and they can even send them to other media channels. There are so many unauthorized news sources in my country and this has caused a lot of controversies as the word "Fake News" is now a thing of the day. A very good example of the fake news that has shaken my country was when there were rumors going around that the ex-president who was still in power at that time was dead. The news created a lot of stir and caused a lot of people to panic. It was news that government didn't debunk at the time of broadcast because the president was actually out of the country for serious medical treatments. This news made waves for a while, only for the president to show up in the country in good health.

Since this incident, the government has decided to implement the rule that has been in the constitution against fake news, derogatory information, and news that can divide the nation. A lot of people have been arrested for this, and a lot of TV station has been sanctioned for their guest who was not cautioned when they started making derogatory statements. While there is freedom of speech in my country, what you say can land you in prison or in front of a judge if it has to do with speeches that incite the general public to violence or commit treason.

Media bias and political influence: Do you think media outlets lean towards specific ideologies or not?

From my experience, media outlets usually lean towards a specific ideology depending on who controls the media outlet. If the media outlet is owned by the government, then they will continually take sides with the government. Also, if it is owned by certain political individuals, the media outlet would tend to report news that is in favor of the political party they are affiliated with. In my country, media channels owned by the opposition would always find the fault of the current government and make it visible to the public, while media outlets owned by the government would continually report good news about the government even in the worst-performing government. Media outlets that do not have any political affiliation will just read the news as it comes and let sleeping dogs lie. So for me, Media outlets lean towards specific ideologies.

Media ownership and concentration: Who owns major media outlets (Channels)?

This depends on the country and the cable network used. When it comes to international networks, most channels are owned by a few companies that decide how news is being shaped and disseminated, but in my country, it is really not centralized by a few entities. Different individuals own different television stations and they give their news based on their affiliation and determine how people would understand the news.

¡Saludos amiga!😊
