Beans: My View, Myself Wk12 - Bartje & Beans

in hive-180106 •  last year  (edited)

During my childhood there was a kid's programme on national television. I can't remember much about it except one thing: the boy, a child, refused to eat beans, brown beans. As the (poor) family sat at the dining table they prayed before they started eating. Bartje always made a scene, he refused to pray and thank God for a meal of... brown beans. If he is forced to eat them he yells: Bartje doesn't pray for brown beans, and next leaves the table. He rather be hungry than eat beans.

Why is it that Bartje refuses to eat beans?
There's a very good reason for it and the teacher even told the mother not to let her son eat beans.
The brown beans hurt Bart his intestines they give him a stomach ache and because of those beans, he keeps farting. Not only does he feel sick, but he is also teased about the fact that he has no control over his intestines. Beans are difficult to digest and humans aren't herbivores.

A side effect of eating brown beans, capuchins, white beans, spotted beans, kidney beans, red beans, broad beans and most legumes is that it causes excessive air in the intestines. The method of preparation is partly to blame but the question remains whether beans are really that healthy if they are always accompanied by stomach pain and a bloated stomach.

Eating beans used to be very common during my childhood. On Wednesday we had baked white beans with potatoes and left meat for dinner. It was grated with breadcrumbs, egg and cheese. As a child, and till today, this is one of my favourite dishes.
A soup prepared of brown beans or a bean dish with bacon was common food too.
Back then brown beans were known as food for the poor. My guess is the television series "Bartje" is to blame for the fact people hardly eat beans these days. The new food for the poor is macaroni which is by far not as healthy but a plus is the intestines are no longer overactive and farting became history.

1972 - A farmer's family in the province of Drenthe in the Netherlands. Bartje refuses to eat beans, his mom promised to make him something else but she forgot. Dealing with poverty, many children and a husband who complains about not having his meal on time is good for a lot of stress. Bartje says at the start of this video: "Mom only looks happy if she holds the baby." The boy misses a hug, a kiss, a friendly word of his mom.

If I think of brown beans

I think of Bartje. As a child I never understood why he refused to eat beans, I loved them and they weren't served daily. If I watch the video I feel for the boy today but I didn't back then. Today I also noticed that Bartje's mom isn't a great cook. She doesn't like to cook and those beans are just food. There's simply nothing else they can afford. Whatever this mom cooked it doesn't look tasty. Yikes, I wonder how it smells so Bartje after all those years I hear you but...

I still like to eat beans!

Brown beans are not often for sale, but white beans are available, as are broad beans, sometimes string beans and green beans they are fresh or sold in a jar or canned. Those canned beans have been soaked and pre-cooked. You can eat them straight from the jar or just heat them.

Dried legumes are more expensive than canned ones and you must first pre-soak them (about 24 hours) and next cook them for a few more hours. Throw the water you soaked and cooked the beans in away. It will reduce the risk of farting! Dried legumes cost more so the choice for canned is therefore quickly made.

Best dishes

I once prepared soup out of white beans. It was delicious. A bit spicy makes bean soup a great winter dish or the perfect meal for rainy days.
I like chili con carne (or sin carne) as well and of course the white baked beans served at English breakfast.
I do not eat much but if it comes to beans, all types, I eat it about once a week.

Beans for a Steemian

Since @mhizta loves beans and I don't like to waste food or give a plate of beans to someone who hates them just like Bartje, I will give @mhizta not a plate but the canned beans we discussed. It's for those rainy days, a quick snack or if his Val doesn't show up in time to cook that big pot of sweetness. I hope he likes them.

BTW I do like mooncakes but not if prepared with red beans. The Chinese New Year, 4722 started. It's the year of the Dragon which stands for luck.

And of course if I hear the word bean Mr Bean pops up in my mind. I can't remember ever seeing him eating beans, did you? I won't share my plate with this guy!
