What is Facebook?

Facebook is a very popular social media platform where people connect with their friends and family. On Facebook, you can share photos and updates about your life and see what others are sharing as well.

Facebook story begins in 2004 with a young computer science student at Harvard University named Mark Zuckerberg. Prior to this, Mark had created Facemash, a website that sparked controversy by allowing users to rate the attractiveness of their fellow students. This venture was met with disapproval from the university administration, prompting Mark to envision a more positive platform where students could connect and learn about each other. Thus, Facebook was born.

Mark, along with his roommate Eduardo Saverin and friends Dustin Moskovitz and Chris Hughes, embarked on this ambitious project. They crafted a simple yet captivating website that quickly became a sensation among Harvard students. In fact, within weeks, over half of Harvard’s student population had registered. Today, Facebook stands as the world’s largest social network, boasting approximately 3 billion active users per month.

On Facebook, you can create an account and then make friends. When you send someone a friend request and they accept it, you become Facebook friends. This way you can connect with people you know in real life as well as make new friends. Facebook offers many useful features. You can upload a profile picture, post status updates, share photos and videos. Other people can like and comment on your posts which enables interaction. So, there is a lot you can do on Facebook! 🙂

Do you have a Facebook account? If so, could you share your experience on Facebook?

In today’s digital age, having a Facebook account is almost a given. I remember creating my own account in 2016, nudged by a friend’s suggestion. Back then, I was a B.Sc student, and the prevailing sentiment was that Facebook was a distraction. With no 3G or 4G internet in our area, Facebook was not as popular as it is today.

Now, even kids have Facebook accounts, which I personally believe is concerning. Without proper guidance and understanding of right and wrong, they could easily fall victim to the darker side of social media.

When I first joined Facebook, I found myself somewhat addicted. I was constantly preoccupied with the number of likes or comments my posts garnered. Every outing was an opportunity to snap a photo for my profile picture. Looking back, I find my past obsession amusing. And now, I haven’t changed my profile picture on Facebook for about two years. I use Facebook very sparingly, mostly to get updates about my friends, and I can’t even remember the last time I posted something.

Could you list two features that you wish Facebook offered?

There are a few features I wish Facebook would implement. A comprehensive privacy dashboard, for instance, would be a welcome addition. It would allow users to easily manage their past posts, search for posts from specific time periods, and edit or delete them as needed. We often cringe at our old posts, and removing them can be a hassle. A user-friendly privacy dashboard would certainly alleviate this issue.

Another feature I’d appreciate is the ability to customize notification settings. Just as we can toggle mention or comment notifications on or off, I wish we could control each category of notifications separately. The sheer volume of notifications can sometimes be overwhelming, so being able to adjust them based on my mood or preference would be a great relief.

Which social media platform is your favorite?

Currently, LinkedIn holds the crown as my social media platform of choice. It’s a must-have for professionals, with a spotlight on career and business-centric features. It serves up a tailored news feed, insights from industry gurus, chances to network, and heads-up on job openings. LinkedIn has morphed into a formidable career instrument. While Facebook is a great hangout for personal connections and fun, LinkedIn takes the cake when it comes to professional engagements. Plus, the news on LinkedIn has a ring of authenticity to it, thanks to its professional user base.
