The spider plant, Chlorophytum comosum, is one of the most common and well-known of all houseplants. It is especially popular with beginners, easy to grow and propagate, tolerant of neglect, and able to thrive in almost any condition. Its common name is derived from the small plants borne on long trailing stems that vaguely resemble spiders. This clump-forming, perennial, herbaceous plant, native to the coastal regions of South Africa, has narrow, strap-shaped leaves that radiate from a central point. Leaves can be solid green or variegated with white or yellow stripes along their length. The leaves are not flat, but appear folded or folded in the middle. Plants are 12-15 inches tall. Thick, fleshy roots and rhizomes evolved to store water, allowing it to survive in stagnant water.

Basila alba is a fast-growing, soft-stemmed vine, up to 10 m (33 ft) in height. Its dense, semi-succulent, heart-shaped leaves have a mild flavor and muslin texture. There are two types – green and red. Bacilla alba has a green stem with green leaves and Bacilla alba 'Robra' has a reddish purple stem. The leaves turn green and as the plant reaches maturity, the older leaves develop a purple color that starts at the base of the leaf and works its way to the tip. When the stem is crushed, it usually emits a strong aroma.

Leaves turn pale yellow or red in fall. Fruit fleshy, up to 5/8 inch in diameter, black and shiny when ripe. The fruit is attractive to wildlife but potentially toxic to humans.

Murraya paniculata can grow up to 23 feet (7 m) tall. However, in landscaping, small crops are often used as hedges. Small maria trees grow to 9 to 10 feet (about 3 meters) when left untrimmed. This type of hedge is usually trimmed to about 6 feet (2 meters high).
