"Six books" are the six types of the composition and use of Chinese characters in ancient China. This concept first appeared in Zhou Li, Di Guan, Bao Shi. The six types are:

1, pictographic: by describing the form of objective things to express the meaning of the word, for example, the word "day" is like a circle, with a point in the middle, much like the form we see when we look directly at the sun.
2, pointing: when there is no, or it is not convenient to draw with a specific image, it is expressed with an abstract symbol, such as "up" and "down" the two words are painted above or below the main body "one".
3, understanding: the form and meaning of two or more single characters are combined to synthesize a word, such as "Ming" composed of "day" and "month".
4, shape and sound: through shape (also known as shape character) and sound (also known as sound character) to express the meaning of the word, such as "cherry" word, shape is "wood", indicating that it is a tree, sound is "baby", indicating that its pronunciation is the same as "baby" word.
5, Note: The meaning of a Chinese character into other meanings, such as "order" "ling" can be used as the meaning of "officer", but also can be used to address people who hold a certain official position or status like "county magistrate".
6, false: there is no corresponding Chinese characters to borrow the same pronunciation of other Chinese characters, such as "Hua" for "flower".

These methods are the basic methods for the ancient Chinese literati to learn and apply Chinese characters. After the "Six books" system was developed, people created new characters based on this system. These methods help people understand and remember Chinese characters and express meaning more accurately in writing and reading.
