The intentionally bred dog list is a very long one that showcases a plethora of designer and fancy dog breeds, a phenomenon that is fast growing even in Africa and amongst most developing nations of the world. A few hundred years back on African soil, there was just one known dog breed, the mongrel.
Now in almost every street with dogs in Nigeria we find a ballooning population among the overall canine population of imported pure dog breeds be it the stout and ferocious Pitbull, the fiery tempered Rottweiler and even the rare and exotic
but gentle giant, the South African boerboel.
Of all dog breeds, my most favourite are the mixed breed and most especially the Mongrel (unintentionally bred dog). From my years of friendship with members of the canine family, I have come to love the mongrel above all other dog breeds and it is with good reasons.
First of all, of all dog breeds the mongrel is closer to nature. Just two adult dogs of the opposite sex and different breeds having coitus naturally without any human interference to potentially reproduce offspring with mutually inherited traits. Mongrels tend to take in beneficial traits from a wider Gene pool and this probably makes them resistant to most diseases that are fatal to the pure designer breeds.
From personal observation I've also found that the mongrel is a hardy survivor and a most street credible dog than even the muscular pure breed dogs like the Rottweiler and the Pitbull for example. Mongrels have a higher survival rate and longevity when feral than do the pure breed.
The instincts of the mongrel is sharper than that of the pure breed dogs and it's highly probable they are a more intelligent breed of dogs than the gene manipulated ones. In recent times, the value of the mongrel amongst dog breeds is sharply going up and this is thanks to a preponderance of the pure bred dogs amongst the overall canine population.
Only time will prove the mongrel with it's fast shrinking population among the overall canine population to be the true and only exotic underdog.
