Paper Battery


A flexible and small power saving device that can be used as a battery is called a paper battery. This paper battery is also used as a capacitor. This battery can be manufactured by combining nanotubes (made of carbon) with nano-composite paper (made using cellulose). The paper battery consists of battery material - high power storage capacity and super capacitor material - high power output and thus, it produces high power.

The main components used for the manufacture of paper batteries include:

Paper Battery = (Cellulose)Paper + Carbon Nanotubes
Carbon Nanotube (CNT) used for cathode endings
Lithium metal (Li +) used for anode end
Different types of electrolytes include blood, urine, and sweat (called bio-electrolytes)

Simple Steps to Building a Paper Battery

Step 1:


Take a cellulose-based paper and apply black carbon ink to it.

Step 2:


Spread the ink used on the paper.

Step 3:


After spreading the ink, apply a thin film over the cellulose area.

Step 4:


Heat the cellulose paper for 5 minutes at 80 degrees C°.

Step 5:


Then, remove the film from the substrate.

Step 6:


Paper battery electrodes are made of film. The LTO and LCO are connected to different films.

Step 7:


Paper battery performance can be monitored by connecting battery terminals to the LED.

Common and rechargeable batteries that we use in our daily lives include various components that are used to produce electrons with chemical reactions to metal and electrolytes. Once the battery paper is immersed in an ion-based liquid, the battery begins to function i.e., electricity is generated by the movement of electrons from the cathode terminal to the anode terminal. It is the result of chemical reaction between the electrodes of the paper battery and the liquid. Due to the rapid flow of ions within a few seconds (10sec) the energy will be stored in the paper electrode during recharging. By accumulating different paper batteries from each other, the output of the paper battery can be increased.

Since paper batteries are closely connected to maximize their output, there is a possibility of shorter intervals between the anode terminal and the cathode terminal. If the anode terminal is connected to the cathode terminal, there will be no current flow in the external circuit. Therefore, to avoid a short circuit between the anode and the cathode barrier or separator is required, which can be filled with a paper separator.

The paper battery are used for different kind of applications as it facilitates benefits such as folding, twisting, molding, folding, molding, and cutting without affecting its efficiency. Since paper batteries are a combination of cellulose paper and carbon nanotubes, they aid in the benefits of long-term use, constant energy, and energy explosion. paper batteries of such types are estimated to be used to power upcoming generation cars and medical equipment.

Paper battery properties can be seen in cellulose materials such as excellent porosity, biodegradability, non-toxic, recycle ability, durability, good absorption, and low shaving power and properties of carbon nanotubes low mass density, lightness, flexibility, high packing density, electrical conductivity better than silicon, thin (approximately 0.5 to 0.7mm), and low resistance.

• In electronics, paper battery is commonly used in mobile phones, laptops, calculators, cameras, mouse, keyboard, Bluetooth devices, and so on.
• Similarly, in the medical science of synthetic tissues, cosmetics, drug delivery systems, and more.
•In cars and airplanes, paper batteries are used in hybrid vehicles .
